Cylinder head assembly L38B WIT-S 22.11.06 S-W38B.0008.GB 120 - 720 01 1/3

Cylinder Head Assembly

1 Application
All W38B in-line engines.

2 Background
Some cases of broken bolts or cracking on inlet air pipes flange to cylinder heads have been reported on
in-line engines, after cylinder head replacements or dismantling (see fig.1). The failure can be caused by:

1. missing (forgetting) washers below fixing bolts on cylinder heads at reassembly; therefore, these bolts
become too long. This combination leads to improper tightening of a.m. bolts and, in worst cases, to
undesired clearance between inlet air duct and the cylinder head.

2. another cause of a.m. breakages is also the improper alignment (positioning) of cylinder heads
towards sealing faces of air inlet ducts, consequently to normal overhauling jobs.

3 Detail of the changes

1. In order to improve the coupling between air ducts and cylinder heads, it has been introduced one
distance bush on each fixing bolt to cylinder head. It allows to guarantee proper tightening and to
make the coupling slightly elastic.

2. In order to improve alignment of cyl. heads a new tool has been introduced (please refer to ASI
document P-W38B.0045.GB).

4 Work instructions

When a cylinder head is reinstalled after normal maintenance jobs, following reassembly procedure
should be followed, in order to avoid any pre-stress on air inlet duct flange:

4.1 Cylinder head alignment

Please refer to ASI document P-W38B.0045.GB.

4.2 Tightening sequence of inlet air duct

On previously unloosened inlet air duct (pipe), tight first the bolts on the cylinder head (A), then on
the engine block (B) and, finally, on exhaust box (C).

In some cases, it may happen to have a clearance between inlet air pipe support and exhaust gas
module (see conection “C” in figure 3). In order to avoid any breakage on SPEX panels, please add
proper shims as washers or metal sheets, adapted on place.
