DRAWINGS OF PLUMBING INSTALLATION
1: The Architect’s drawing normally give little information about the actual layout of water
services pipes in the building.
2: The information normally at the point of entry of the rising main/service pipe into the building,
the position of the water tank and the various sanitary fittings connected to it.
3: As QS, we have to decide a suitable layout of the pipes and plot them into own drawings
before can actually commence the taking-off works.
4: It is good practice to draw the various pipes in different colours, such as the rising main in
“red”; the distribution/dropper pipes in “blue”; and the required stopcocks, valves or other
accessories.

ORDER OF MEASUREMENT
It is important to adopt a logical order of “taking-off”.
The normal or frequent order of taking off list in the practice is:
1. The trench excavation and the underground pipes from site boundary or
water meter to the building;
2. The rising main pipe up to water storage tank including any
stopcocks, holes through walls, forming chases for pipes, etc;
3. The branches of distribution pipes from water tank to associated
sanitary fittings; including any stopcocks, holes through walls,
ceilings and floors, etc;
4. The fittings and valves associated to the system;
5. The water storage tank and associated items such as overflow pipe;
6. Any other works connected to the piping installation such as painting
pipes, testing the installation, protecting pipeworks, etc.
