a communist apartment buildings

In response to the problem of reinforcing the old communist apart-

ment buildings KLIMAS Wkret-met has developed an economical and
easy-to-install reinforcement system which maintain high endurance
properties. The estimated cost of the WK-RENO reinforcement system
(excluding the strength of the existing hangers) is about 20-25% of
the insulation system, which constitute a fractional part of the entire
thermal modernization expenses, especially when taking into account
any costs that may occur during any malfunction after the thermal
improvements.

The advantages of WK Reno system:

• Quick and easy installation – simple operations which require no special tools
• High durability - the system provides high durability, which guarantees long-term
use and safety.
• No installation stresses - the system does not cause any fitting tensions, can be instal-
led near edges and reduces possible assembly damages.
• ITB Technical Approval - confirmed quality by the Institute of Building Technology
• Threaded rods made of A2 or A4 steel - the highest corrosion protection
• The WK-RENO system ensures the stabilization of the entire wall and transfers signi-
ficant loads from its own weight (shear force) and from wind suction (tensile forces)
• Steel (TSM) or plastic (TSN) sleeves prevent resin leakage into empty spaces between
layers which significantly reduces resin usage.
• One size drill is used for drilling holes to significantly accelerates and facilitates in-
stallation process,
• Easy to use during thermal insulation of already insulated buildings (new system on
the old system) - limited exposed areas for anchors installation

CHEMICAL ANCHOR SYSTEMS
INTRODUCTION

Chemical anchor system

is an alternative to mechanical connection methods. Chemical anchoring
offers a number of benefits compared to mechanical anchoring:

• VERSATILITY – chemical anchors can be used with a variety of sub-

strates;
• FLEXIBILITY – threaded rods and rebars can be used, with a number
of bar diameter and embedment depth options further expanding the
capabilities of the system;
• STRENGTH – withstands highest loads;
• SIMPLICITY AND AFFORDABILITY – the system is easy to install and
affordable, especially when compared to mechanical anchors;
• NO TENSION - the system does not cause substrate stress during in-
stalling, allowing for use near the edge of the concrete element.

CHEMICAL ANCHOR SYSTEMS
INTRODUCTION

Working principles
Three basic working principles are:

Anchoring by friction – force applied to the connector is transferred to

the substrate using friction between the connector and the substrate. Ex-
pansion forces are achieved thanks to torque applied to the screw, that
causes the expanding element at the end to expand.

Fig. 3
Anchoring by
friction

Anchoring by keying – force is transferred to the substrate by achieving

the proper shape of the connector that fits into the substrate or cuts into
it. In case of solid substrates, installation occurs by cutting or drilling into
the material, while for substrates with holes or plasterboards, the anchor
sleeve or plug sleeve changes its shape to fit into the substrate.

Fig. 4
Anchoring by
keying

Anchoring by bonding – the force is transferred using adhesion forces

between the connector and resin and resin and the substrate. Installation
using adhesion does not cause stress in the substrate material, which is
very important when installing near the edges.

16
CHEMICAL ANCHOR SYSTEMS
INTRODUCTION

Chemical anchor
Chemical anchor consists of a steel bar (threaded or rebar) and an injec-
tion anchor. For hollow substrates, the set includes a plastic or metal mesh
sleeve, that prevents resin from penetrating the empty spaces. Force ap-
plied to the connector is transferred to the substrate using adhesion forces
between the connector and the resin and resin and the substrate. Chemical
bonding processes are caused by mixing two ingredients (resin and hard-
ener). The main advantage of this connection is even distribution of stress
in the base material, allowing for installation relatively close to the edges.
Using adhesion to connect the bars to concrete becomes increasingly pop-
ular in construction (renovations, connecting and reinforcing structures).
The bars installed this way can serve both as anchors and as structural re-
inforcement.

Fig. 6 Working of the chemical anchor

Chemical anchor selection rules

Selection and proper installation of the anchor are extremely important.
This is why each user should follow the following selection rules:
• Base material (concrete strength class, solid masonry, hollow brick) -
depending on substrate type different types of injection anchors are
used. WCF-PESF anchor is used for substrates with hollows;
• Environmental conditions - the environment determines the choice of
anti corrosion protection and the material the anchor rod should be
made of. Installations in chemical plants or in offshore environments
are more exposed to corrosion;
• Spacing between anchors and distance from the edge - the fastening
should be done taking into account basic installation conditions (rec-
ommended spacing and distance from the edge) in order to achieve
full loading capacity. These distances can be decreased to minimal
values which affects the loading capacity of anchors, in such a cases
appropriate reduction coefficients should be applied;
• Type and direction of the forces - static and dynamic forces and their
direction (tension, shear or combination of both);
• Load value - increase in the load determines the choice of anchor di-
ameter and embedment depth. Large diameter, deeply anchored bars
can carry heavier loads;
• Installation parameters - embedment depth, hole diameter, installa-
tion torque.

INTRODUCTION

Substrate types
Wide range of construction materials is currently available on the market.
Substrates in general can be divided into solid and hollow substrates. First
group includes regular concrete, solid ceramic and silicate bricks and cell
concrete blocks. Substrates with hollows include hollow bricks and hollow
materials. WCF-PESF injection anchor is perfect for hollow bricks when
combined with the (TSN or TSM) mesh sleeve that prevents the resin from
filling empty spaces.

Fig. 7 Substrate types

Cracked and non-cracked concrete

Concrete is a construction material resistant to compression, but it is vul-
nerable to tension. This is why in areas where tensile stress occurs, steel
bars are used (also called rebars), whose role is to carry the tensile stress.
This type of construction is referred to as reinforced concrete. In reinforced
concrete elements there are always two stress zones separated by a neu-
tral axis, zones with compression and tension. Cracked concrete is pres-
ent in the tension zone, while non-cracked in the compressed area. Micro
cracks appearing in the tension zone are normal (acceptable crack width is
0.3 mm). The tension zone usually appears at the bottom of the construc-
tion, in elements supported on both ends (due to the nature of the load),
this, however, is not always the case. The figure below shows a typical re-
inforced concrete beam with supports and cracked area. In situations like
that WCF-EASF anchors are a good choice, as it allows for installation in
cracked concrete.

crete beam

Rod material
Threaded galvanized rods are made of carbon steel. Their durability param-
eters are described by appropriate mechanical property grades (3.6 up to
12.9).

18
CHEMICAL ANCHOR SYSTEMS
INTRODUCTION

Rod grade symbol is made up of two numbers separated by dot.

For example, for 5.8 grade,

• The first number indicates the 1/100 of ultimate tensile strength:
Rm = 5x100 = 500 MPa (N/mm2)
• The second number represents steel plasticity and indicates the tenth
part of ultimate tensile strength (Rm) that is the yield strength (Re),
here Re = 0,8x500 = 400 MPa (N/mm2)

5.8 grade steel keeps its elasticity within the 0 to 400 MPa limit, perma-
nently changes its shape within the 400 to 500 MPa limit and breaks
above 500 MPa.

Corrosion/corrosion categories
Corrosion is a process that destroys the structure of the material, leading to

it breaking down. There are two types of corrosion:

• Chemical corrosion - caused by contact with environment. The rate of
this corrosion depends on concentration of individual chemical factors
in air and water (sulphur, chloride - industrial areas, offshore areas -
large concentration of salt)
• Electrochemical corrosion (galvanic corrosion) - occurs when two
materials with different electrochemical potentials come into contact.
It leads to forming of a corrosion cell and gradual damage to one of
the materials

It is very important to determine the location and working conditions in

the point of contact in order to ensure continuous, reliable use of the build-
ing. There are 5 grades of chemical corrosion, depending on location and
usage type:

Corrosion category Temperate climate environment examples (for information purposes only)
according to PN-EN ISO Interior Exterior

C1 very small Buildings with heatings and clean atmosphere, Does not apply
such as offices, stores, schools and hotels.
C2 small Buildings with no heating where condensation Small degree of atmospheric contami-
might occur, such as storage facilities and sports nation. Mainly for rural areas.
arenas.
C3 average Manufacturing facility with high humidity City and industrial atmosphere,
and some degree of air pollution, such as food average SO2 contamination. Coastal
production plants, breweries, laundries and dairies. areas with low salinity.
C4 very large Chemical plants, pools, shipyards and boatyards. Industrial areas and offshore areas
with average salinity.
C5-I very large Building and areas with constant condensation Industrial areas with high humidity
(industrial) and high pollution and aggressive atmosphere.
C5-M very large Building and areas with constant condensation Coastal areas and marine environ-
(marine) and high pollution. ments with high salinity.

Average yearly zinc layer reduction rate is given for above-mentioned cor-
rosion grades. Based on this average it is possible to determine the durabil-
ity of connectors depending on their zinc layer thickness.
As a general rule, galvanized anchors should be used inside buildings or
in environments with small corrosion exposure, while for highly corrosive
environments, stainless steel - A2 or A4 connectors are recommended in-
stead.

CHEMICAL ANCHOR SYSTEMS
INTRODUCTION

Spacing and distance from the edge

Proper anchor installation and upholding recommended installation condi-

tions is extremely important. In such situations, anchors are able to create a

CN optimal stress cone and achieve full loading capacity of the connection. In
case where the conditions cannot be maintained, the spacing and distance
from the edge can be decreased to characteristic minimal values. Since in
such scenario stress cones overlap, when calculating loading capacity the
reduction coefficients provided in tables 7-9 should be considered.

CHEMICAL ANCHOR SYSTEMS
INTRODUCTION

Acting forces
The following loads can apply to anchors:
• Tensile force – axial force whose effect applies to the connector axis,
the connector is pulled out of the base material;
• Compressive force – axial force whose effect applies to the connector
axis, the connector pressed into the base material;
• Shearing force – force perpendicular to the connector axis, transverse
force applied to the point where the connector comes in contact with
the base material;
• Resulting force – simultaneous effects of axial (tension or compres-
sion) and shearing forces;
• Bending moment – an effect of shearing force applied at some dis-
tance from the base material surface. This leads to a bending force that
is calculated by multiplying the force arm by the force.

These forces can cause a loss in connection capacity by damaging the an-
chor or substrate. Loading capacity depends on basic factors such as: con-
crete class, anchor rod grade, embedment depth, connector axial spacing,
connector distance from the edge and resin strength.

N
V
S

Fig. 14 Forces acting on a chemical anchor

Damage caused by tensile and shearing

forces
Tensile forces:

• Steel failure (anchor rod) – failure occurs due to application of tensile

force along the axis of the anchor, causing it to break. Loading capacity
depends on steel grade of the rod and its cross-section area.

Fig. 15 Steel failure (anchor rod)

21
CHEMICAL ANCHOR SYSTEMS
INTRODUCTION

• Pull-out – failure resulting from tensile force, that causes the connec-
tor to be pulled out of the hole it is installed in. Loading capacity de-
pends on resin strength and embedment depth.

Fig. 16 Pull-out failure

• Concrete cone break-out – failure results from the tensile force break-
ing a cone-shaped portion of the concrete out of the material along
with the anchor rod. Loading capacity depends on base material
strength (concrete class) and anchor embedment depth.

Fig. 17 Concrete cone failure

• Splitting – this type of damage occurs when substrate is not thick

enough or when the hole drilled is too deep. This causes concrete to
split.

Fig. 18 Splitting failure

22
CHEMICAL ANCHOR SYSTEMS
INTRODUCTION

Shearing forces:

• Steel failure (anchor rod) – damage occurs due to application of

shearing force perpendicular to the axis of the anchor rod, causing it
to be cut. Loading capacity depends on steel grade of the connector.

Fig. 19 Steel failure (anchor rod)

• Pry-out – damage resulting from shearing force, that causes a piece of

concrete to be pried out. Loading capacity depends on base material
strength (concrete class) and anchor embedment depth.

Fig. 20 Pry-out failure

• Concrete edge failure – it occurs when shearing force is directed at

the edge of concrete and the distance between the edge and the rod
is not enough.

Fig. 21 Concrete edge failure

CHEMICAL ANCHOR SYSTEMS
INTRODUCTION

Drilling methods
There are four different types of drilling:
• Rotational drilling – pure drilling without hammer drill force. Recom-
mended for hollow materials and low durability materials. This does
not cause the hollows to expand or the brick walls to crack;
• Reduced hammering drilling – drilling force produced by rotation
and low energy hammering. Recommended for solid bricks, weak con-
struction materials;
• Full hammering drilling – drilling force produced by rotation and full
energy hammering. Recommended for highly durable concrete;
• Diamond drilling – recommended mainly for large diameter holes
(but not only) or for concrete with large number of rebars.

Installation conditions
There is a number of conditions that allow for use of chemical anchors.
Installation can be performed in dry concrete, water-saturated concrete,
flooded holes or holes fully immersed in water. Keep in mind, that for wet
concrete or flooded holes, the loading capacity can be lower than that of
the dry concrete.

Chemical anchor installation

• Before installation, indicate the drilling points;
• then drill the holes in accordance with the parameters selected (diam-
eter and depth of the hole);
• the holes should be cleaned with SCF brush and blown out clean with
PCF pump;
• unscrew the resin cartridge lid, screw on the mixer nozzle onto the
mouth of the cartridge and in case it is the first use of the cartridge,
extrude 8-10 cm3, to make sure the resin has uniform colour (its ingre-
dients are fully mixed);
• for hollow materials use an additional TSM or TSN mesh sleeve to keep
the resin in place and prevent it from filling the empty spaces in the
substrate;
• apply the resin to the hole (at about 2/3 depth) or to the mesh sleeve
(filling it completely) moving the mixer nozzle from the bottom of the
hole in order to make sure no air gaps appear;
• in order to apply the resin into deep holes use MCF-P of MCF-PK exten-
sion hose installed over the mixer nozzle and a resin stopper (it should
rest against the bottom of the hole before application; the hose should
be filled with resin);
• install the anchor rod in the hole within working time, using calm, re-
volving motion, so that the resin adheres to the rod and hole walls;
• remove excess resin flowing out of the hole with a putty knife;
• load on the connector can be applied after reaching maximum
strength parameters (after the resin hardens completely);
• after attaching the fixture on a threaded rod, screw in the nut with ap-
propriate torque.

CAL REPORT TR029
In order to make using the catalogue easier, the technical parameters of the anchors are provided in tables, it is however
worth knowing how the calculation for these anchor types are made.

1. Documents used for the calculations

Calculations were conducted using the following reports and documents:

• EOTA TR 029 – "Design of Bonded Anchors"
• European Technical Assessment

2. Injection anchor design - general concept

Designing injection anchor fastenings, one should employ partial safety factors and show that the design actions do
not exceed the calculated loading capacity .

Design resistance is calculated using the following formula:

– design resistance of a single anchor of group of anchors

– characteristic resistance of a single anchor of group of anchors
– partial safety factor of material

3. Partial safety factors

In case of concrete cone failure

• For tensile force:

– partial safety factor for concrete

– partial safety factor taking into account installation safety of an anchor system
– for systems with high installation safety levels
– for systems with normal installation safety levels
– for systems with low, but acceptable installation safety levels

• For shearing force:

– partial safety factor for concrete

– for shearing load

In case of steel failure:

• For tensile force:

– characteristic steel yield strength (nominal value)

– characteristic steel ultimate tensile strength (nominal value)

4. Loading resistance for the tension load - simplified method.

4.1. Steel failure

Characteristic loading resistance of an anchor in case of steel failure can be calculated using the following formula:

– anchor rod cross section [mm2]

– characteristic steel ultimate tensile strength [N/mm2]

4.2. Pull-out failure

Characteristic loading resistance for an anchor or group of anchors in case of pull-out can be calculated using the fol-
lowing formula:

– concrete cone actual area of influence

6. Loading capacity to combined tension and shear loads

For simultaneous occurrence of both tensile and shearing forces the following conditions should be met:

- ratio of designed load to designed loading resistances with tensile and shearing force applied

values (NRd , VRd) taking into account partial, material safety factors .
• Table 6 includes base installation conditions: nominal spacing between anchors as "s" and distance "c" in order to
create an optimal stress cone, for the anchoring to achieve full loading resistance.
• It is assumed that the axial spacing between anchors "s" and minimal distance between the anchor and the edge "c"
cannot be lower than half of the embedment depth ( ).

DIMENSIONING OF ANCHORED REBARS, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TR023/EC2 STANDARD

DESIGNING THE POST INSTALLED REBAR CONNECTIONS IN ACCORD-

ANCE WITH THE TECHNICAL REPORT TR023
1. Post installed verification method - TR023/EC2

Rebar connections are evaluated in accordance with technical report TR023 and should be designed as
straight rebars with comparable behaviour as cast-in-place rebar connections in accordance with EC2 using
the design bond resistance of fbd.
Conditions provided in EC2 regarding the details (cover, corrosion resistance, spacing between bars, trans-
verse reinforcement) should also be met.

Additional statements:

In order to avoid concrete damage during drilling, the following conditions should be met:
• Minimum concrete cover cmin = 30 + 0,06lv ≥ 2Ø [mm];
• Minimum spacing between two rebars amin = 40 mm ≥ 4Ø
lv – anchorage length, Ø – bar diameter

• for bars installed in the tension zone, the minimum anchorage length and is calculated in accord-
ance with the EC2 standard for anchoring and bars should be increased by a factor of 1.5. This increase
should not be ignored if it is proved that the bonding strength of post-installed or cast-in rebars is similar.

The transferring of the shear loads between the new and old concrete should be designed in accordance with
the EC2 standard.

2. Basic embedment length in accordance with EC2

Basic required embedment length , required to achieve the strength of in a straight bar is calculat-
ed, assuming that the stress is constant and equals to - is calculated using the formula

in which:
Ø - rebar diameter
- designed stress in the point from where embedment length is measured.
- designed value of the bond strength limit depending on concrete strength
and bar diameter provided in ETA technical assessment.

- factor depending on the quality of bond conditions and bar position during concreting:
= 1.0 if conditions are "good",
 = 0.7 for other cases and always for bars in structural elements built with slip-forms,
unless it can be proven that "good" bond conditions occur.

depends on bar diameter:

= 1.0 for Ø ≤ 32 mm,
= (132 - Ø)/100 for Ø > 32 mm.
After transforming the formula we receive a formula for design strength (force Fs for bar at given installation

point), assuming good bond conditions for bars of up to Ø=32 mm:

3. Design anchorage length

Design anchorage length lbd is determined using the formula:

in which: and are the factors mentioned in Table 1;

- is the factor dependant on the bar form, assuming adequate cover

- is the factor dependant on minimum concrete cover (Figure 25),
- is the factor dependant on the confinement by transverse reinforcement,
- is used to influence the effects of one or more transverse bars ( )
along the design anchorage length,
- is used to take into account the pressure transverse to the plane of splitting along
the design anchorage length

The product should conform with

- calculated in accordance with section 2.

- is a minimum anchorage length (where other regulations do not require a greater length):

- when anchorages in tension

- when anchorages in compression

4. Overlaps - General assumptions

a. Forces are transferred from one bar to another by:

• lapping of bars without hooks,

b. The bar laps shell be such that:

• the transmission of the forces from one bar to the next is assured;
• spalling of the concrete in the neighbourhood of the joints does not occur;
• large cracks which affect the performance of the structure do not occur.

c. Laps:
• between bars should normally be staggered and not located in areas of high moments
/ forces (e.g. plastic hinges). Exceptions are given in (e) below;
• at any section should normally be arranged symmetrically.

d. The arrangement of lapped bars should comply with Figure 27:

• the clear distance between lapped bars should not be greater than 4 and 50 mm, otherwise the
lap length should be increased by a length equal to the clear space where it exceeds 4 or 50 mm;
• the longitudinal distance between two adjacent laps should not be less than 0,3 times the lap
length ;
• In case of adjacent laps, the clear distance between adjacent bars should not be less than 2 and
20 mm.

e. When the provisions comply with (c) above, the permissible percentage of lapped bars in tension
may be 100% where the bars are all in one layer. Where the bars are in several layers the percent-
age should be reduced to 50%.

All bars in compression and secondary (distribution) reinforcement may be lapped in one section

Features and advantages

Wide range of Fence, gate, railing, white armature, wall cabinets, lighting, air-conditioning,
applications calculated in accordance with TR 029
Does not release volatile styrene compounds, making it safe for people and
Styrene-free suitable for indoor applications
No stress in substrates It wallows for installation near the edges without risking cracking of the sub-
during installation strate
Quick and shrinkless
Speeds up installation work
hardening
Long
Valid for use within 12 months in normal storage conditions
life

Two mixers Ability to reuse the resin after completing work. Place the mixer on an unused
cartridge mouth for next use, then unscrew the dried mixer and install the
included new one - the anchor is now ready for further work
Content -
Small volume creates an affordable solution for small scope of work
300 ml
Mesh sleeves used for installation in substrates with air gaps allows for hold-
Optional - mesh sleeves ing resin in place of installation (the resin does not flow into the empty spac-
es), thus allowing for proper installation

Durable and safe Foil packaging prevents the resin from getting out during prolonged storage,
while the plastic cartridge serves as an additional protection layer (store in
packaging upright position)

Deep hole cleaning brush

Description
The brush is one of the basic tools required to properly prepare the installation hole. After blowing the dust out of the hole you should repeat the cleaning process
at least 2 times, cleaning the walls with the brush, then blowing the hole with compressed air. For average hole depth you have to use a brush installed directly
onto the handle, while for deep holes you need to use 1 extender or 2 extenders for very deep holes. Modular construction allows for adding multiple extensions.
The thread connection can be used with various extensions for different diameters
