ESIT-Z-MAN-047 (Rev B) - eSite Operation & Maintenance Manual 15

OPERATION

3.4 GENSET CONTROL

eSite can control the genset in three different modes, Auto, Forced On and Forced off. Note that these
modes are different than the ones set on the genset panel. On the genset panel Manual mode shall always
be selected. If the genset panel is set to Auto mode, the eSite will try to Force it back to Manual mode.
1. Auto
Auto is default and shall always be active when leaving the site. This mode will make sure that eSite can
start the genset when required. When eSite is running in Auto, it will determine by itself when to start and
stop the genset. This includes for instance, certain delays and timers, in order to keep the batteries and the
genset in good condition.
When working on site, genset may shut down due to the following conditions
a. Charge cycle is completed.
b. Green power influx. When Solar power, grid power or a combination can handle the consumed power
and fulfill charging criterion for the batteries. If work is done on site, and a genset start is needed, set
eSite to ForcedOn.
c. Genset shutoff, if the generator is started from the generator panel, eSite will automatically shut down
the genset after 120 minutes. To override this set the eSite in 'ForcedOn'.
2. ForcedOn
This mode may be used during maintenance or troubleshooting, when a start is needed in order to verify the
system without a charge command, i.e. when batteries are almost full, or solar is delivering enough power to
pause the genset. If 'ForcedOn' is entered, the genset won’t turn off automatically.
3. Forced Off
This mode may be used to shut down the genset before maintenance or troubleshooting. Emergency
button shall always be pushed down when working with the genset. If Diriflex is put to 'ForcedOff', it can’t be
started automatically. Make sure eSite is not in this mode when leaving the site.
When starting the genset from eSite, either in 'Auto' or 'Forced on'. A few additional timers are built into
eSite, to make sure start and stop of the genset is done in a proper way.
1. Warm up timer, the genset will warm up for 30 seconds and run at idle speed before speed is started to .
ramp up.
2. Ramp up timer, a stable ramp up will be done from warm up speed, during up to 60 seconds.
3. Overvoltage timer, if an overvoltage is observed by eSite, it will command a lower genset speed for a
shorter time period. It is calibrated to run at 2000 RPM for 120 seconds before normal charging is
re-entered.
4. Ramp down and Cooldown timers, in order to stop the generator in a safe way, eSite has timers to take .
care of ramp down and cool down of the generator.
Safe mode
The DC genset is not permitted to produce power to the customer load without the battery bank connected.
This because DC gensets are not fulfilling the international standards IEC 60950-1. Voltage ripple and
voltage levels cannot be guaranteed to be within range.
Therefore if the battery breaker is tripped eSite will command the DC genset to stop. This will shut down
customer load and eSite if not enough solar power or grid power is available.
Site work power limitation
When eSite is set in auto mode, an automatic 'Genset Power limitation' will be activated, when any eSite
door is opened. This is a preventative protection for the equipment, and will take down the battery charge
current to 5A, if the genset is running. The load will still be supplied from the genset.
The limitation is released when the doors are closed, or after 12 hours. If the work is not completed after 12
hours, reactivate the power limitation by closing the doors for a short time.
Note! When leaving site ensure that the door alarms are cleared.
Genset related alarms

16 ESIT-Z-MAN-047 (Rev B) - eSite Operation & Maintenance Manual

OPERATION

Never reboot eSite to clear alarms, the alarms might go away but the issue is not solved! Alarms will clear
itself when the issue is solved.
DC Genset failed to run
This alarm is trigged if eSite is unable to start or run the genset. This will be set mainly from two different
faults.
1. When the genset can’t be started. This may occur when there is a fault present at the genset.
2. When the genset is stopped from an event that is without eSite control, for example empty fuel tank,
shutoff form genset panel or a genset fault.
If eSite is in auto mode eSite will try to start genset with 30 min interval.
The alarm will clear itself when eSite has taken control over the genset again.
DC Genset power failure alarm
The genset is able to run but is not able to run at higher speed than idle speed and therefore will not be able
to produce any power. If this failure occurs, and eSite is in 'Auto', genset will be commanded off.
If eSite is set to 'ForcedOn', the alarm will be set, but eSite won’t shut off the genset.
The alarm will clear itself once the genset is able to run faster than idle speed.
DC Genset Speed request warning
This alarm is trigged if the genset is not able to run at the requested rpm. It might still be able to produce
power but is running with degraded performance.
Genset will continue to run until it is commanded off from eSite.
The alarm will clear itself when the measured speed is corresponding to the actual speed again.

3.5 BATTERY MANAGEMENT

Diriflex battery charging has been optimised to achieve the best possible input energy harvesting
performance, irrespective of power source. Diriflex will provide start and stop commands to a genset in
order to provide a pre-defined amount of charge to the battery bank. The Diriflex genset start and stop
criteria depend on a combination of measured battery bank voltage, relative charging level (State Of Charge)
and specific timing conditions, the timing typically applies near the end of a genset run cycle, when the
battery charge current has declined to a rather small value for natural reasons.
Whenever grid power or solar power is available, the genset operation will automatically take this situation
into account, with fewer generator runs per day. This reduction of genset run cycles is a natural
consequence of the fact that the genset start command will not be triggered if SOC remains sufficiently high
due to charging current from additional power sources connected to eSite.
Additionally, Diriflex automatically provides battery full charge cycles without any need for user intervention.
The initiation of full charge cycles depend on a combination of energy throughput and time. Diriflex has a
maximum time defined by default, where a full charge cycle will be started, irrespective of other conditions.
Full charging will be ensured also without genset, the difference is that our rectifiers will not be stopped at
the end of the full charge cycle. Instead, the rectifier voltage set points will be reduced to float level from
boost level. Additional details about the precise levels can be shared on request.
The low voltage disconnect threshold is 43.5V, but the system stay well above that threshold in normal
operation.

5.7 BATTERY
OBSERVE AND BE AWARE OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE WORKING ON
THE BATTERIES
• Work on the battery should be carried out by qualified personnel only
• Do not smoke
• Do not use any naked flame or other sources of ignition
• Risk of explosion and fire
• While working on batteries wear protective eye-glasses and rubber gloves
• Observe the accident prevention rules as well as EN 50272-2, EN 50110-1
• Use isolated tools

CHEMICAL HAZARDS – BATTERIES

When working with lead-batteries ensure that eye wash equipment is available, as well as protective gloves
and apron to protect skin and clothes.
Lead acid batteries can give off gases that in the event of a fire can cause an explosion that is likely to be
fatal. All battery areas must be adequately ventilated and protected from fire.

BATTERY ACID HAZARD

Excessive heat can cause battery casing to soften and warp,

potentially allowing acid to leak from the battery. In contact with the skin acid can
cause injury and if inhaled the airways might get affected. Use protective equipment
when replacing batteries.

Batteries can leak electrolyte if improperly handled. Electrolyte in contact with skin
or eyes can cause injury. In the event of electrolyte injuries rinse the affected area
with water and seek immediate medical attention. Use protective equipment when
replacing batteries.
