Practice proper hygiene protocol at all times
Introductory Message
Welcome to Mathematics for Grade 7!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Cadiz City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through
the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide
the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the learners
meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to guide

the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in acquiring
the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Mathematics Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal or
no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to the
learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Mathematics Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning even
if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and engaging
activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and understand
the instructions then perform the activities and answer the assessments. This will be
returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Illustrating and Differentiating Related Terms in Algebra:
a. 𝑎𝑎𝑛𝑛 where 𝑛𝑛 is a positive integer
b. constants and variables
c. literal coefficients and numerical coefficients

I. Learning Competency with Code

Illustrates and differentiates related terms in algebra:
a. 𝑎𝑎𝑛𝑛 where 𝑛𝑛 is a positive integer
b. constants and variables
c. literal coefficients and numerical coefficients
d. algebraic expressions, terms and polynomials
e. number of terms, degree of the term and degree of the polynomial.

II. Background Information for Learners

In the language of Algebra, the following are important terms to remember:
• 𝑎𝑎𝑛𝑛 where 𝑛𝑛 is a positive integer
In 𝑎𝑎𝑛𝑛 , 𝑎𝑎 is called the base
𝑛𝑛 is called an exponent
To read, “𝑎𝑎 raised to 𝑛𝑛”.
If 𝑛𝑛 is 𝑎𝑎 positive integer, then 𝑎𝑎 is used as factor 𝑛𝑛 times.
𝑎𝑎𝑛𝑛 = 𝑎𝑎 x 𝑎𝑎 x 𝑎𝑎 x 𝑎𝑎 … (𝑛𝑛 times)
• Terms in mathematical expressions are composed of constants and variables.
Constants are numbers that have fixed values while variables are symbols or
letters that may take one or more than one value.
In 2𝑥𝑥 + 4𝑦𝑦 + 6, 6 is the constant
𝑥𝑥 and 𝑦𝑦 are the variables
• Literal coefficient is the variable including its exponent in a term while numerical
coefficient is a constant that is multiplied to a variable. The word coefficient alone
refers to numerical coefficient.
In 3𝑥𝑥², 𝑥𝑥² is the literal coefficient
3 is the numerical coefficient

a. 𝑎𝑎𝑛𝑛 where 𝑛𝑛 is a positive integer
b. constants and variables
c. literal coefficients and numerical coefficients
d. algebraic expressions, terms and polynomials
e. number of terms, degree of the term and degree of the polynomial.

II. Background Information for Learners

Another important terms in Algebra that need to be understood:
• Algebraic expression is a group of terms separated by plus or
minus sign
• Term is a constant or a variable or a product of a constant and variable.
In an algebraic expression 9𝑎𝑎² + 11𝑏𝑏 – 𝑐𝑐, the terms are 9𝑎𝑎², 11𝑏𝑏, −𝑐𝑐.
• A polynomial is an algebraic expression where the exponents of the
variables are all whole numbers (non-negative exponents).
An algebraic expression is NOT a polynomial if:
a. The exponent of the variable is NOT a whole number.
b. The variable is inside the radical sign.
c. The variable is in the denominator.
• A polynomial can be classified according to the numbers of terms and according
to its degree.
Kinds of Polynomials according to the number of terms
a. Monomial – polynomial with one term
Examples: 𝑎𝑎², 4𝑦𝑦, − 21, 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎
b. Binomial – polynomial with two terms
Examples: 𝑧𝑧 + 4, 9(𝑥𝑥 + 1) – 6, √2𝑥𝑥² + 𝑥𝑥
c. Trinomial – polynomial with three terms
Examples: 𝑎𝑎2 + 𝑎𝑎 – 1, 6𝑥𝑥³ – 𝑥𝑥² + 2
d. Multinomial – polynomial with four or more terms
Examples: 𝑥𝑥 5 + 2𝑥𝑥 4 – 3𝑥𝑥 2 – 4, 5𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎³ + 3𝑎𝑎² + 4𝑎𝑎 + 𝑏𝑏 – 7
• Degree is the highest exponent or the highest sum of exponents of the variables
in a term. The degree of an expression is the highest degree of its terms.
In 3𝑥𝑥 4 𝑦𝑦 2 + 𝑥𝑥 − 7, the degree is taken by adding the exponent of 𝑥𝑥 which is 4
and the exponent of 𝑦𝑦 which is 2.
Thus, 4 + 2 = 6.
Therefore, the degree of 3𝑥𝑥 4 𝑦𝑦 2 + 𝑥𝑥 − 7 is 6.
Kinds of Polynomials according to its degree

6
Practice proper hygiene protocol at all times
a. Constant – a polynomial of degree zero
2
Examples: 500, -7,
5
b. Linear – a polynomial of degree one
Examples: 𝑥𝑥 + 6, 81𝑎𝑎, 𝑥𝑥 – 3𝑦𝑦, 𝑧𝑧
c. Quadratic – a polynomial of degree two
Examples: 8𝑥𝑥 2 , 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎, 13𝑥𝑥² + 5𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑥, 23𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 + 7
d. Cubic – a polynomial of degree three
Examples: 2𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎, 4𝑥𝑥²𝑦𝑦 – 2𝑦𝑦, 3𝑥𝑥³ – 2𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦²
e. Quartic – a polynomial of degree four
Examples: 16𝑥𝑥 4 , 𝑎𝑎2 𝑏𝑏 2 , 5𝑥𝑥² + 4𝑥𝑥³𝑦𝑦, 18𝑎𝑎³𝑏𝑏 + 7
f. Quintic – a polynomial of degree five
Examples: 10𝑎𝑎2 𝑏𝑏 2 𝑐𝑐, 9𝑥𝑥 2 𝑦𝑦 3 – 2𝑦𝑦, 10𝑥𝑥 5 – 2𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑥 + 7𝑦𝑦²
The next degrees have no universal name yet, so they are just called
“polynomial of degree ___________”.
