What Is Friction?
The force that opposes the motion of an object is called friction.
Types of Friction
There are four types of friction namely
o Static friction
o Kinetic friction
o Rolling friction
o Fluid friction
1. Static friction: If the pushing force F is less than the resistance force
of friction Fr (written as F < Fr), there is no motion and the
objects remain static with respect to each other. In this case, the
friction is considered static friction, which means object is not
moving.
2. Kinetic friction: If the pushing force F is greater than the friction
force Fr (written as F > Fr), then the object will slide or move.
The friction is considered kinetic friction, which means
moving friction.
3. Rolling friction: Rolling friction is the frictional force which opposes or
resists the motion of an object which is rolling through a
surface. Rolling friction is also known as rolling resistance or
rolling drag. Rolling friction is the resistive force that slows the
wheel's motion on the other solid surface.
Centripetal force:
This is a force on a rotating object directed towards the center of circulatory path and
that keeps the object in that circulatory path.
Centripetal force based on 3 factors:
o Mass of the object
o Objects distance from the center (Radius)
o Velocity of the object
Centrifugal force:
It is an outward force on a body rotating about an axis, assumed equal and opposite
to the centripetal force or it’s a tendency of an object to leave the circulatory path and
fly off in a straight line.
Key Differences
o Centripetal force is a tendency of the object that follows a curved path to fly
away from the center. In a centrifugal force object moving with a uniform speed
along a circular path.
o Centripetal force is an inward force and centrifugal force is an outward force.
o Centrifugal force is often referred to as inertial force or untrue force.
o Centrifugal force is said to be an equal and opposite reaction to the centripetal
force.
