Philippines

BSED SS 1-1D | Group 3

INTRODUCTION

This section of the study will introduce the research entitled ‘’The Role of Globalization on the
Implementation of K to 12 Program in the Philippines’’

I. Rouse (2016) states that, Globalization is the spread of ideas, goods, and transactions
around the globe, forming connections.

II. The K-12 Program is a program designed to enhance the students' skills and cognitive
abilities in preparation for their collegiate life and mastery of skills to produce
globally competent graduates. Sturgis, C. (2017)

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

I. The K to 12 curriculum was implemented back in 2013 when the former President Benigno
Aquino III signed the program into law , making the basic education to have an additional
two years, aiming to provide the Filipino students a better education for them to b globally
competitive. According to Aquino, this will provide a brighter future for the young Filipinos
b equipping them with basic education up to international standards .

II. Prior to the implementation of the K-12 curriculum , The Philippine was the only country in
Asia that still has 10 years of basic education , that hinders the Filipinos to be recognized
internationally . According to Mocorol ( 2016 ) the new curriculum will surely improve the
educational system and the economy of our country for it will open a wider opportunities for
the filipinos in the global market .

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

a. In a report conducted by Magno, C. (2011) entitled) ‘’Analysis of the Basic

Education of the Philippines: Implications for the K to 12 Education Program’’, the
10-year basic educational program in the Philippines produced low-level performance
in academic and international performances. Students attained low levels of
performance in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Survey (TIMSS)
and the National Achievement Test (NAT).

b. Du ( 2012 ) cited in his journal entitled " K- 12 Education and Philippine

Development " that education plays a vital role in a global competitiveness and the
economic development of the country. It empowers the people and the nation by
giving them a capacity to enhance their economic and social status .

c. According to Abulencia ( 2015 ) in his article The Unravelling of K- 12 program as

an Education reform in the Philippines he stated that though the true aim of education
was to nurture human being , the students need to be well-trained an educated
because of a global competition and for them to be a contributors in the development
of the national economy.

d. Philippines has undergone a major change since the introduction of the K-
12 curriculum of the Department of Education. It has been four years since the switch
and the K-12 program is genuinely oriented towards global competitiveness.
First, it helps students to learn and practice more advanced subjects. Second,
One aspect in K-12 has a huge impact on every Filipino student is that K-12 offers a c
omprehensive education.
Finally, the program allows graduates to be globally competitive and internationally r
ecognized.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1. What are the problems in our former education system that the Government saw which
led them to the implementation of the K-12 Program?

a. An author from the website Inquirer.Net(2018) states that the Philippine Government
viewed the quality of the former educational system as lacking towards global
competence. In order to be at par with the international standards, the government
then published the Republic Act No. 10533, which established the kto12 program,
passed in 2013.

b. The Philippines is one of the three countries in the world who still uses the 10-year
basic education program (inquirer. Net , 2018). Thus, Professionals and graduates
from the former educational system tend to find difficulties from companies abroad to
credit their scholastic attainment ( Magno C. ,2011)

c. According to Magno, C. (2011), the 10-year basic educational program in the

Philippines produced low-level performance in academic and international
performances. Students attained low levels of performance in the Trends in
International Mathematics and Science Survey (TIMSS) and the National
Achievement Test (NAT).

2. How does globalization affects the implementation of the K-12 program in the
Philippines?
Globalization in the implementation of K-12 Program.

a. The program was implemented in compliance with international standards and

convention on the average length of basic education cycle that would allow the
recognition of the Philippine educational system graduates as legitimate tertiary level
and education applicants and professionals abroad (Castillo, 2016)

b. One of the main objectives of the program according to the Department of education
is to implement a decongested curriculum that is focused on excellence. The task
necessitates designing a primary and secondary education program of study that
adheres to high academic standards that is internationally recognized. (Department of
Education, 2010)

3. How did the implementation of K-12 Program in the Philippines affect Globalization?

A. It intends to give adequate time to master the ideas and create long lasting abilities, get
ready the graduates for tertiary training, and to make students for internationally focused
aptitudes of work and enterprise.

B. Philippines might be a major source of international students by 2035. Therefore,

through K-12 program, graduates will have more critical thinking skills and globally
competent and recognized.

C. Change in our society begins with appropriate instruction and education. The
execution of the K-12 arrangement in the Philippine Basic Education Curriculum is the
way in to our country's prosperity and improvement.

CONCLUSION

1. Recognize the educational system graduates as legitimate tertiary level and education
applicants and professionals abroad.

2. It adheres to a high academic standard towards global competence.

3. K-12 program enables the student to be the leader of relevant and globally-recognized
knowledge and skills in the global market.
