DESCRIPTION:
This course is a structured learning activity designed to equip the nursing staff with the basic
knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to provide safe and quality care for patients with risk for
depression and suicide in a non-psychiatric inpatient setting.
RATIONALE:
Suicide, particularly among hospitalized medically ill patients, is a rare event. Despite their
rarity, suicides in the medical setting can have substantial effect on the hospital environment, especially
for a staff that lacks specific training in the assessment and management of suicide. Physical illness
increases the risk for suicide. An increased likelihood of suicidal ideation, attempts, and completions
have been reported in patients who have central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction, general medical
disorders, and specific symptoms such as pain and physical limitations. It is estimated that between
0.97% and 1.9% of all suicides occur in general hospitals, accounting for an estimated 5 to 15 patient
deaths per 100,000 admissions in general hospitals. Although psychiatric consultations are appropriate
and common for suicidal patients in nonpsychiatric units, it is important for healthcare providers to
competently assess for suicide risk and to take reasonable steps to ensure the safety of a suicidal
patient.
OBJECTIVES:
After the course, the participants are expected to:
1. Understand the biopsychosocial process of the development of depression and suicidality in
medically diagnosed patients in a non-psychiatric inpatient setting
2. Identify risk factors and red flags signifying depression and suicidality in medically diagnosed
inpatients in a non-psychiatric setting
3. Determine independent nursing interventions in managing a patient with high risk for
depression and suicide in the non-psychiatric inpatient setting
4. Determine best approaches on how to manage a depressed and suicidal patient promoting
patient-centered care and interprofessional collaboration
5. Recognize the importance of assessing early signs of depression and suicidality and how its
detrimental for patient safety
