Second – Course, Mid Exam 2020 / 2021

Subject: Field measurements and Surface Production Class: 3rd Stage

Time: 1.5 hr
Examiner: Dr. Muayad M. Hasan Date: 29 / 6 / 2021

Note: Answer only two questions (6 marks for each)

Q1: Determine the appropriate size of vertical separator required to separate produced well
fluid into gas, water and oil phases, and discuss your results. The volume of the oil pad is
5.2 m3, Given data:

Gas flow rate 2 MMscfd Oil viscosity 8 cp

Oil flow rate 960 m3/day Water viscosity 1 cp
Water flow rate 4000 BOPD API 36°
Operation pressure 150 kPa (SG)w 1.03
Operation temperature 85 °F Compressibility factor 0.84
Gas specific gravity 0.6 Gas viscosity 0.012 cp
Hint: the retention time of the water is half of that retention time for oil.
Droplet removal = 100 microns liquids, 500 microns water, 200 microns oil.
The initial assumed value of drag coefficient is > 0.34

Q2: Sizing a vertical separator to separate produced well fluid into gas, and liquid phases.
The gas to oil specific gravity ratio is 0.67. Then, discuss your results. Given data:

Qo 3500 bbl/day API 30°

Qg 13 MMSCFD Droplet size removal 140 microns
P 890 psig μ 0.013 cp
T 65 °F Retention time 2.2 min
Compressibility factor 0.84
Hint: Use the drag coefficient value obtained in (Q1).

Q3: Design a horizontal separator to separate produced well fluid into gas, water and oil phases.
The retention time of oil is twice of that retention time of water. Discuss the effect of the
retention time on the separation process. Given data:

1
Qo 6000 bbl/day API 40°
WOR 0.5 )SG(w 1.07
Qg 8.0 MMscfd Sg 0.67
P 1000 psig μo 8 cp
T 88 °F μw 0.8 cp
(tr)w 5 min CD 0.64
Gas compressibility 0.87

Droplet removal = 100 microns liquids, 200 microns oil and 500 microns water.

Good Luck
