MY FIELD STUDY EXPERIENCES

I believe that we don't need a traditional classroom setting for us to learn.

Dedication and burning passion is what we need. Field Studies are part of the curriculum

which the pre-service teachers need to take up. It is an experiential learning subject.

It is such a great experience observing, learning and doing tasks at the same time.

At first I thought that this subject field studies will be so difficult because we will be doing

it virtually but with the help of my group and the kindness of my Resource Teacher

Ma’am Gloria C. Calacala from the San Jose City National High School and our Field Study

Adviser Ma’am Bernadeth Delos Reyes of Central Luzon State University it became

challenging but more inspiring because I felt the dedication of every teacher we observe

despite of the pandemic we are currently battling with, their passion is superb that no

matter what the problem will occur they will always have a solution. But I think my

journey in this Field Studies will be more exciting if it is in an actual classroom setting.

But, as I have said, we don’t need that traditional classroom setting for us to learn, we

must adapt to what we called the “New Normal” for us to survive.

Before this Field Study started I together with my group Dianne, Yna and Xanthy

had a virtual meeting via google meet and I told them that I want our group to be

organized in all aspects, paper works, attendance sheets, documentation and all. With

that I created a group chat with them for documentation purposes only, all the

screenshots during our class observation must be sent to that group chat. Also I created

a google document for our observations, all the things we observe during the online class

must be written to that google document. With that our field studies journey is smooth

sailing and easily progresses everyday. I should say that every class observation we are

learning a lot of things even if it is positive or negative, during our first class observation,

we observed one student-teacher, it seems that he is not prepared for his online teaching

demonstration because, he has difficulty in presenting his presentation with google

classroom, also he doesn’t follow the flow of the lesson plan. He is stuttering and doesn’t

elaborate his examples. But, we totally understand him because it is challenging to teach

the students online. With these observations I together with my group had another

meeting. We motivate each other Yna said that “Kailangan nating maging handa sa ating

demo, kailangan nating aralin mabuti ang ating lesson para magkaroon tayo ng mastery

sa topic” Dianne agreed, by that I scheduled another meeting to teach them how to use

the basic features of the google meet and at the same time to have a discussion who will

take care of our attendance and monitoring sheets.

Most teachers are following the flow of the class inlined with the lesson plan but

some are not. I think some topics are not capable of having a
virtual motivation that is why some are giving it as assignments for the students to enjoy

the learning process. It is lively when observing students because they are all

participative, when the teacher calls their name they actively answer the question.

There are four (4) primary learning modality 1. Face to face 2. Distance Learning

3. Blended Learning and 4. Homeschooling. But during the new normal our resource

teacher focused on Distance Learning. The distance learning has three (3) types namely:

Modular Distance Learning, Online Distance Learning, and Television/Radio-Based

Instruction. Our resource teacher is using modular distance learning and online distance

learning. In San Jose City National High School they have asynchronous and synchronous

classes, during the synchronous the teacher will discuss a particular topic and give tasks

or assignments at the end of the class and during asynchronous the students will answer

all the modules given by the teachers.

Problems and challenges can’t be avoided during this ‘new normal’, the primary

problem that both students and teachers are experiencing is the poor internet

connection. It can’t be avoided because we all know that the internet connection in our

country is poor. Another problem is when the students don't have money to load their

prepaid sim. Not all students are capable but all students must adapt to this current

situation. Thank you to those teachers who are very considerate to their students. I

believe that we need empathy for others for us to overcome these challenges brought by

the pandemic.

One fulfilling experience that I had is when one student

approach me through messenger chat to clarify their assignments and to seek

advice on what is the best thing to do with that particular matter. I felt like I am now a

real teacher, it is very satisfying when they are calling me ‘Sir’. Now I can actually say to

myself that I made the right decision and that is to pursue Education in college.

In this Field Study we don’t only observe classes and create lesson plans, we also

experience doing paper work like IDLAR or the Daily Log and Accomplishment Report and

the WHLP or the Weekly Home Learning Plan. I, together with my group, accomplished

IDLAR from week 1 to week 4 of our field studies. We put what are our accomplishments

everyday and because of these we are able to see our progress everyday. In WHLP we

created a learning plan in Physical Education and Music subjects. It is difficult but it is

part of being a teacher.

In this ‘new normal’, I think it is better if the school will have partner stakeholders

because it can be their sponsor in creating or implementing different activities that can

benefit the students. For example having partners with other telecommunication

companies to provide load cards or to give free gadgets for those students that are in

need or less fortunate. It is better if we promote partnerships in the middle of the

pandemic because we need each other, we can’t survive on our own. And there are a lot

of opportunities that may occur if we do partnerships.

I am very grateful and blessed because even if I didn’t experience the actual

classroom setting in the teaching demonstration, I learned a lot. We can’t deny that all of

us are suffering
from this pandemic but all of us are trying our best to survive. Let’s be all thankful with

all the blessings we could get. Let’s pray that this challenge will end very soon.

PADAYON!
