No Seat At The Table - Illustrated by Rajab Eryigit, Bob Mollema, Erhan Muratoglu, Jasmijn
de Nood
Jap Sam 2021 ISBN 9789492852328 Acqn 31551
Hb 24x29cm 120pp col ills £23

What defines a City? Is it its buildings, public spaces or people? No Seat At The Table is a
fictional graphic novel about the local and global influences of gentrification on citizens in Turkish
and Dutch cities. The book highlights four neighbourhoods where this phenomenon is occurring:
Piyalepasa in Istanbul, Ismetpasa in Ankara, De Kolenkitbuurt in Amsterdam, and Lombok in
Utrecht. Each story is told from the perspective of pigeons and inspired by real life experiences of
residential displacement in Turkey and the Netherlands. The stories critically investigate
gentrification, the housing crisis and the current interpretations of setting priorities and
affordability in urban planning. By doing so, it aims to facilitate the conversation on inclusive and
sustainable cities for all.

Pb 17x26cm 56pp ills £29.50

In Before I Was Born, Tja Ling illustrates the story of her family's journey from China to the
Netherlands, between the 1930s and 1970s, in 14 interconnected pencil drawings. Out of respect
and admiration for the way her (grand)- parents built a life for themselves with all the challenges
they have had to face, migrating without any formal education or knowledge of the local
language.

These drawings are a chronicle of pride, strength and respect. A narrative of a child discovering
why her parents are the way they are, why they did what they did and how, ultimately, their
experiences were destined to also shape her, even before she was born.

The unique binding method ensures that all drawings are connected without the interruption of a
page border. When fully opened, the book measures 4.75m in length. Due to the leporello
binding, the book can be browsed in 2 directions. There are 2 'sides' to the book, just as there are
2 sides to every story.

Nishiko - Repairing Earthquake Project 2011-2021

Jap Sam 2021 ISBN 9789492852120 Acqn 31549
Pb 16x24cm 272pp col ills £27.50

An art initiative dealing with an extensive natural disaster - the Great East Japan Earthquake of
March 2011 - 'Repairing Earthquake Project' started with a simple idea: repairing objects that
were destroyed in the tsunami. A first trip to the tsunami-hit areas of Miyagi was made in 2011,
with the aim of finding broken objects and making careful observations of these areas and the
people who lived there. The trip has since been repeated multiple times over the past eight years,
following the progression of the reconstruction of buildings and memories, and observing
changing traces of the aftermath as they are slowly wiped away.

Wapke Feenstra - Boerenzij. The Rural Side

Jap Sam 2021 ISBN 9789492852335 Acqn 31550
Pb 20x26cm 192pp 27.50

Artist Wapke Feenstra explores the direct physical and mental environment by tapping into local
knowledge. 'The Rural Side' takes the former appellation of Rotterdam-Zuid as its starting point.
In the past, farm workers and their families moved to the area because there were jobs to be
found in the city's harbours. In time, the rural and urban became intertwined. This art project was
created with and by people from Rotterdam, placing rural migration, mindsets, memories, objects,
and plein air drawings in the midst of the current gentrification of Rotterdam-Zuid. It demands
critical awareness of the ease with which rural culture is being swallowed up and urbanised
worldwide.
