1.2 Warnings.

Not bearing in mind the following warnings can result in serious injuries or
death.

These winches of type DM – RMI 700 to 1800 are not build for transport, lifting or hoisting
of persons and/or animals.
When persons and/or animals need to be moved one should use an approved type of
winch for this kind of movement.

The cable stopper on the drum of these winches are not designed to hold the cargo weight.
It is necessary to keep at least 3 (three) cable stroke wrapped around the drum, so that the
cable will remain on the drum.
Stay away from the hanging cargo and / or cable under tension.
A cable that breaks or a cargo that falls can lead to serious injuries or even to death.
Make sure, that all materials, controls and feeding of the winch are in perfect condition and
are maintained in the right way before using the winch.
Avoid shocking and/or swinging of the cargo, because this puts a lot of tension on the
winch, which could surpass the nominal allowed values. This could result in a broken cable
or malfunctions of the winch.

1.3 Guarantee
The guarantee will only be valid, if the winch is used according to the hereby mentioned
instructions and maintenance guidelines.

BEN Marine Service Equipment GmbH guarantees specifically her products, provided that
they are maintained according to these regulations, for defaults in the material and/or
defaults of fabrication, which show during normal use.
Damages caused by incorrect operation, incorrect use, overloading or by using not original
parts, are not covered by the guarantee.
The guarantee is specifically limited to reparation or replacement of the product, such only
at judgement of BEN Marine.

A possible appeal at the guarantee can firstly be addressed to BEN Marine, if written and in
detail, mentioning explicitly the default and the circumstances when the default occurred.
Normal wearing of the product is not included in the guarantee. We can not guarantee for
damages which follows of incorrect operation and not applicable using of winch.

1.5 General description.

BEN Marine winches will be delivered with a drive of an electrical motor. The worm gear is
fitted at a DIN / IEC conform made flange.
The shaft of the drum, which is completely made of steel, is supported at one side by a self-
regulating bearing, whereas the other side is generally supported in the gearbox.

The winches can provide left turning as well as right-turning the same amount of power.

2. Transport and storage

The winches are generally transported and/or stored on wooden pallets. It is important, that
whilst shipping and storing the pallet is carefully supported, for due to imprudent treatment
damages to the winch may occur. During transportation any kind of shock has to be avoid,
because of damage of bearings.

When storing for a longer period one must, in order to prevent corrosive damage, not
expose the winch to moist and/or changing temperatures. A dry surrounding with a constant
temperature between 5 degrees and 40 degrees Celsius is recommended.

Storage for a long period of time (more than 5-6 month) demands, that -especially in case
of outdoor storage -the winch is placed carefully on wood, free from the ground.
The gearbox and all grease points should be completely filled with oil/grease.
All visible moving parts and not waxed parts should be completely covered with acid- free
grease. An impeccable waterproof cover with for instance a cover sail for protection against
influences from the outside is recommended.

3. Installation

3.1 Building
The winch footplates are assembled on a totally level underground, obtained by for instance
processing the skid, forging or by means of fill-plates.
Especially when dealing with a heavily loaded winch all attachment surfaces ought to be
clean, dry and grease-free.
A winch must be attached with bolts of the right size and right quality, (8.8 is permissible for
the most applications), equally turned home with the right tension using a moment-wrench. .
In order to prevent slipping off in the bolts one must assemble reaction plates on the skid
against which the winch foot –plate is supported in pull-direction.
Make sure, that the deflation valves are at the highest point of the winch and are easily
reached.

The first fairlead for the drum should be at a certain distance from the winch, so that the
deviation of the cable is no larger than 1:15 (4). When dealing with a turn-free cable the
deviation should not exceed 1:40 (1,5 ).
The one who operates the winch should at all time have an excellent view at the
surroundings of the winch in general and specifically of the drum and cable. Avoid all
unnecessary risks!

3.2 Cable guidance

The guidance of the cable can only move in one direction: this direction is indicated on the
enclosed drawing. When the cable is slacked, make sure, that at least three lays stay on
the drum to avoid a slip. Consult your supplier about the quality to use and cable to use.
We are at your service for all your questions and remarks.

3.3 Cable wrapping

The cable diameter for the drum is instructed in the beginning of this manual. The way in
which the cable should be wrapped is shown on the drawing.
The construction of the winch and the placing of several parts leave no room for another
way of wrapping. The cable end is attached to the drum by means of a cable clip on the
outside of one of the flanges of the drum; for this purpose an opening for the cable has
been made in the flange.
During wrapping of the cable (with turning engine) a certain constant tension must be
maintained. Make sure that the cables are laid tightly next to each other and use, if
necessary hammer and tap-wood.
The cable tension on the drum is recommended at least 200-300 daN.
It is only possible to store that size of cable on the drum if one has got 1.5 times the cable
diameter to spare on the flanges. Once again, when slacking, leave at least three lays on
the drum.

4 Commissioning.

4.1 Instigation
The several plugs of the gearbox should be in the right position and easily reached.
 deflation above;
 level reading side;
 drain plug (magnetic) at the lowest point.

Although the gearbox is delivered with the right quality and right quantity, it is wise to check
everything before operating.
The instigation should be filled according to jointed in documentation. The oil level can only
be checked when not operating. For correct wrapping the turning direction (attachment for
the engine) should be checked; use the cable clip for a safe assembly and guide the cable
direction according to the drawing. Further details about the electric engine according to
documentation.

4.2 Test run

Start the winch up, if possible without load. When shaking badly, when it is making a lot of
noise or when the temperature of the gearbox surpasses 80 degrees Celsius, stop and
check the system.
Turn and brake a couple of times to be sure that:
 the system when carrying is stable ;
 the system is safe to operate;
 the cable speed in both directions is conform the specification;
 nothing is slipping or dragging when loaded.

4.3 Hoisting and lowering

Make sure that when lining the winch the cable does not run against the drum.
Check that at lowering minimum 3 windings stay for safety at drum.

alignment of the drum, the gearbox the engine and the skid.

2. The electrical motors are free of maintenance.

3. The oil should always be on the right level, check for leakage and replace if necessary
packing and sealing.
At least every 12 months all grease nipples should be greased.

4. Check regularly if the layer of paint is still intact; paint an extra coat if necessary.

5. Check the cable regularly according to DIN 15020, page. 1 en 2; grease the cable
regularly.

Further check-ups, unless the machine is exposed to abnormal heat or vibrations are not
required.

When repairing/executing maintenance activities:

- turn off the power;
- remove the load, or fasten it, so everything stays verifiable;
- avoid environmental endangering situations (consult local authorities when disposing
of oil or anything)
