NARRATIVE REPORT ON READING

I. Rationale

Reading is a tool a person gets information from written letters and words. It is actually a
complex, multi-part process. Reading in classroom takes many forms, but it is often used as way of
introducing grammar or vocabulary items. We can say that reading is one of the very important
element of education in which understanding what we read is a key and certainly the main point of
teaching reading in a class.

According to the author of English Expressway Book, “Reading is fundamental to function in

today’s society, it is a vital skill in finding a good job and is important because it develop one’s mind.
The students learned because we teach. And one of the important skills that need to be developed
in children is Reading. It can open up new worlds and enrich live.

As an institution of learning, a school need to challenge itself to prosper the love for reading
in every student. With this, Corona A. Cabanilla National High School initiated various activities,
reading programs and strategies for the school year 2020-2021 to ensure that every child is a reader
despite the challenges that this pandemic brought to the world. In the time of facing the adversity
caused by COVID-19, CACNHS teachers still manages to reach out to the learners to do the task just
to ensure the development of the reading ability of the students. With this, it will strengthen them in
the development of attitudes and skills in reading and speaking which will make them productive
and functional individual.

This school year had been so tough to all of the teachers in facing the new normal set up.
Despite the challenge that this pandemic brought to Corona A. Cabanilla National High School, the
school never stop reaching out to the learners in terms of developing their reading abilities. The
teachers of CACNHS adopted the program of the Division of Occidental which is the READING
TRAVAILS. The teachers conducted the home visitation and distribute reading materials to be used
by the learners. Every teacher had a list of learners to be monitored and given interventions.

In the opening classes, we conducted parents’ orientation regarding the new set up on the
reading program implementation and intervention to be conducted to the learners specially those
learners in frustration level and slow readers. We encountered difficulties in the implementation but
still make sure that the need to develop their reading ability has been delivered.

In line to the different activities that every school conducted, Mrs. Marcel H. Latonio, District
Reading Coordinator lead the conference and made all the school coordinators to report the status
of the reading program of their respective schools. Part of the conference was the conduct of the
Reading Derby to be participated by the learners and the teachers.

CACNHS teachers and learners wholeheartedly participated in the event. With that, Ms. Verna A.
Decolas won the first place in Story Telling- Teacher’s Category and also represented Don Marcelino
District during the Division Reading Derby. The Grade 8 student of CACNHS Ritchelle Limot also
participated in the Story Telling – Learner’s Category. For the Demonstration Teaching, Mrs. Brigette
Darren B. Colita won the first place in the District Demonstration Contest and also represented Don
Marcelino District during the Division Reading Derby as one of the Teacher Demonstrator.

Those various reading activities from school to District and to Division Level, have been of great
help to the teachers specially to the learners in the development and love for reading. It brought
realization and learning to the teachers to extend more effort in achieving the goal that “EVERY
CHILD IS A READER.” Learners can’t love reading if the teachers are not showing the love for it.

IV. Recommendations

Since CACNHS is a newly established school, it still needs a lot of resources and funds to
make reading fun and meaningful. For this school year, we always encourage the parents through
PTA to give their full support on the reading program of the school. We may not have that functional
reading center as of now, we still make sure that students could learn to read by our most effort and
ability that we could provide.

What is essential is that we provide appropriate instruction to those struggling readers and
conduct various interventions and programs for them.

For us to be able to successfully conduct and achieve the objective set:

 All teachers should acquire knowledge on the most effective strategy that could
improve student’s reading performance. It should not just the reading focal that will
be given opportunities for seminars about reading but all of the teachers.
 Budget allotment for the construction of reading center and also for the reading
materials should be prioritized. This encourage the students to love reading if they in
a functional center.
 PTA and other stakeholders should be encouraged to support reading programs of
the school through seminars with in the school level.

V. Plan for Sustainability

The primary goal is to make sure that all the learners are readers. Not also just a
reader but a reader with comprehension. Sustaining the implementation of the reading
program, activities and interventions is quite a challenge to the teachers.

CACNHS’ future plans for the sustainability of the program are:

a. Constant conference and meeting of the parents regarding the program.

b. Create officials and members for an organized program.
c. Initiate a school level seminar and workshop about reading strategies.
d. Provide effective and enjoyable reading materials.
e. Weekly home visitation.
f. Teachers’ willingness and commitment on the program to extend a great
effort to the learner’s development.
