REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN

Topic: Column
 A reinforced concrete column is a structural member designed to carry
compressive loads, composed of concrete with an embedded steel frame to
provide reinforcement. For design purposes, the columns are separated into two
categories: short columns and slender columns.
 A column or pillar in architecture and structural engineering is a structural
element that transmits, through compression, the weight of the structure above to
other structural elements below. In other words, a column is a compression
member.
 A column is a vertical structural member intended to transfer a compressive load.
Columns are typically constructed from materials such as stone, brick, block,
concrete, timber, steel, and so on, which have good compressive strength.
ECCENTRICALLY LOADED COLUMN
 When the load acting on the column is offset from the centroid of the column,
then it establishes the bending of column along with the axial stress. This offset
loading of the column is referred as eccentric loading.
 Eccentric loading will not be at the middle of cross-section of the column. It will
be at some distance from the middle of the column either towards right or left
corners of the column. The distance between the middle of cross-section of the
column and the eccentric load is referred as eccentricity symbolized by e.
Increase in the eccentric load increases the axial load and the moment acting on
the column. This makes the column to bend additional increasing the bending of
column.
 Examples of eccentric loading activities include performing a calf raise off the
ledge of a stair, an exercise that has been shown to decrease the risk of achilles
tendon injuries. Another example is the nordic curl exercise, which have been
shown to help reduce the risk of hamstring strains.

AXIAL LOADED SPIRAL COLUMN

 Spiral columns are cylindrical with a continuous helical bar wrapped around the
column. This spiral provides support in the transverse direction. Tied columns
have closed lateral ties spaced approximately uniformly across the column.
 Concrete columns reinforced with spiral reinforcement can withstand more loads
than the tied columns. This phenomenon happens because when load
eccentricities are small, spirally reinforced columns show greater toughness,
greater ductility than the columns with ties.

column. This spiral provides support in the transverse direction. Tied columns
have closed lateral ties spaced approximately uniformly across the column.
STANDARD SIZE OF COLUMNS
 Standard size of an RCC column should not be less than 9”x 9” (225mm x
225mm) with 4 bars of 12mm Fe500 Steel with m20 grade of concrete and
stirrups of T8@6″C/C. I will recommended 9″ × 12″ (230mm × 300mm)
standard size of RCC column for ground floor residential building.
 The size of the columns depends on the total load on the columns. There are
axial loads and lateral loads. Large beam spans induce bending moment not
only in the beams, but also in columns which are pulled by the stresses in the
beams.
