WRITE-UPS NO. 3
Topic: Column
A reinforced concrete column is a structural member designed to carry
compressive loads, composed of concrete with an embedded steel frame to
provide reinforcement. For design purposes, the columns are separated into two
categories: short columns and slender columns.
A column or pillar in architecture and structural engineering is a structural
element that transmits, through compression, the weight of the structure above to
other structural elements below. In other words, a column is a compression
member.
A column is a vertical structural member intended to transfer a compressive load.
Columns are typically constructed from materials such as stone, brick, block,
concrete, timber, steel, and so on, which have good compressive strength.
ECCENTRICALLY LOADED COLUMN
When the load acting on the column is offset from the centroid of the column,
then it establishes the bending of column along with the axial stress. This offset
loading of the column is referred as eccentric loading.
Eccentric loading will not be at the middle of cross-section of the column. It will
be at some distance from the middle of the column either towards right or left
corners of the column. The distance between the middle of cross-section of the
column and the eccentric load is referred as eccentricity symbolized by e.
Increase in the eccentric load increases the axial load and the moment acting on
the column. This makes the column to bend additional increasing the bending of
column.
Examples of eccentric loading activities include performing a calf raise off the
ledge of a stair, an exercise that has been shown to decrease the risk of achilles
tendon injuries. Another example is the nordic curl exercise, which have been
shown to help reduce the risk of hamstring strains.
