PROBLEM 1 (15 pts)
The propped cantilever beam is a W150 x 37.1 steel section. Determine the support reactions and the
deflection at A. Using
a) Double Integration Method
b) Area Moment Method

Draw the shear and moment diagram and use E = 200 GPa and I = 22.2 x 106 mm4

PROBLEM 2 (20 pts)

Determine the support reactions of the propped cantilever beam using DIM and AMM. Draw also the shear
and moment diagram.

PROBLEM 3 (10 pts)

Column ABC has a uniform rectangular cross section and is braced in the xz plane at
its midpoint C. (a) Determine the ratio b/d for which the factor of safety is the same
with respect to buckling in the xz and yz planes. (b) Using the ratio found in part a ,
design the cross section of the column so that the factor of safety will be 3.0 when P
= 4.4 kN , L = 1 m, and E = 200 GPa .
PROBLEM 4 (5 pts)
The linkage is made using two A992 steel rods, each having a circular cross section. If each rod has a
diameter of 3/4 in., determine the largest load it can support without causing any rod to buckle. Assume
that the rods are pin connected at their ends.
