Sheet 03
1) A plate (plane stress) is subjected to x = -60 MPa, y = 50 MPa and xy = 35 MPa. If the
plate is subjected to a uniform temperature rise of 75 oC, find the principal strains taking E =
200 GPa, and x 10-6 / oC.
2) In a steel member, normal strains of 650x 10-6, - 420 x 10-6 and 350x 10-6 are measured in
directions of 0o, 60o and 120o anticlockwise with respect to the horizontal direction. Find the
strains, the magnitude and direction of the principal stresses knowing that these measurements
are made at -50 oC. Take E = 207 GPa, and x 10-6 / oC.
Hint: consider the problem to be plane stress.
3) A long (plane strain), thick – wall cylinder is subjected to an internal pressure of 120 MPa
and a temperature rise of 200 oC. The stresses at the inner surface are r = -120 MPa, = -
350 MPa. If the bore diameter is 150 mm, determine the change in bore diameter. Take E =
210 GPa, and x 10-5 / oC.
