CHCAGE002 Implement Falls Prevention SAB v3.1 THEORY
This Student Assessment Booklet-II includes Task 1 for assessment of this unit.
This unit requires that you complete 3 assessment tasks. You must complete all tasks to achieve
Competency for this unit.
Prerequisite
The prerequisite for this unit is NIL.
PERFORMANCE EVIDENCE
The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance
criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be
evidence that the candidate has:
implemented falls prevention strategies for at least 2 older people and monitored and evaluated
those strategies in a collaborative, positive and respectful manner
The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks
outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the
context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:
the ageing process and how it might affect the risk of falls
factors, including stroke, contributing to the risk of falls and their impact on older people and
their carers
normal posture, gait and balance and how to recognise deviations
medical causes of falls, including stroke and how to recognise signs of those causes
the physical and psychological effects of falls on older people and their carers
falls prevention strategies and indicators of when a strategy should be halted
legal and ethical considerations for working with older people, including:
duty of care
human rights
privacy, confidentiality and disclosure
work health and safety

a) Falls incurred by older people are usually referred to as ‘multi-factorial’. What does this mean in relation to the
older population? Provide a supporting example.
b) Provide at least five examples of internal and external risk factors that may contribute to a fall in the older
population. Provide your response in the table below.
c) Explain why there is a strong correlation between age and the occurrence of falls.

Think of someone you know of or a client you may have worked with who encountered a fall. Describe the impacts on
both their family and carer.

Jules has had a stroke which has left him paralysed down his left side. He finds it difficult to walk and his speech is
badly affected. Jules’s cognitive function is not affected.
His family and GP feel that he is at risk living on his own. He is at high risk of falling, he may have another
stroke, and he is unable to be understood on the telephone if he needs to call for help.
His family and GP all want him to go into aged care – at least until he recovers (hopefully) from the stroke.
Jules says that he doesn’t want to go. He will stay at home no matter what the risk. He can look after himself –
and if he can’t that is his problem and not anyone else’s!
His family say that he has to go into care – the risk is much too great for him to live at home alone.

The client is worried that the doctor will make him take anti-depressant medication.
Fleur tells him not to worry. She has done a short massage course and is also good at talking to people. If he
would like she will give him a massage each day and she would be happy to talk through his worries with him
