level
1. a Design an expression for the stress induced in a helical 05 L1 CO1
compression spring with usual notation.
b Derive an expression for deflection in helical spring 05 L1 CO1
OR
2. a Derive the Lewis equation for the beam strength of a spur gear 05 L1 CO2
tooth. Also, list the assumptions.
b Define ‘Formative number of teeth’ as applied to Helical gears and 05 L1 CO2
explain its importance in the design of Helical gears.

3. Design a valve spring for an automobile engine, when the valve is 10 L5 CO1
closed, the spring produces a force of 45 N and when it opens,
produces a force of 55 N. The spring must fit over the valve bush
which has an outside diameter of 20 mm and must go inside a space of
35 mm. the lift of the valve is 6 mm. The spring index is 12. The
allowable stress may be taken as 330 MPa and modulus of rigidity, G
= 80 GPa.
OR
4. A forged steel pinion (SAE 1040) rotating at 400 rpm drives a high 10 L5 CO2
grade cast iron gear. The transmission ratio is 4:1. The pinion has 15
standard 20° full depth involute teeth of 4 mm module. The face width
of both the gears is 40 mm. How much power can be transmitted from
the stand point of strength?

A semi elliptical laminated spring has effective length of 1 m. the spring has to L5 CO1
5. sustain a load of 75 kN. The spring has 3 full length leaves and 16 graduated
leaves. If the leaves are to be pre-stressed such that the stress induced in all the
leaves is same and are limited to 400 MPa, when maximum load is applied. The
width of the leaves is 9 times the thickness. Assume E= 200 GPa. Determine:
a Width and thickness of the leaves 4
b Initial space that has to be provided between full length leaves and 4
the graduated leaves before the band is applied.
c Load on the clip to close the initial gap. 2
OR
6. A cast steel pinion with an allowable stress of 103 MPa rotating at 900 rpm is to L5 CO2
drive a cast iron gear at 1440 rpm. The teeth are 20° stub involute and the
maximum power to be transmitted is 25 kW. The allowable stress for cast iron
gear is 56 MPa. Determine from stand point of strength the following:
a Module 6
b Number of teeth on gears 2
c Face width 2
7. A pair of carefully cut spur gears with 20 ° Full depth involute profile 20 L5 CO2
& is used to transmit 12 kW at 1200 rpm of pinion. The gear has to rotate
8 at 300 rpm. The material used for both pinion and gear is medium
carbon steel whose allowable stress may be taken as 230 MPa. Design
the gear pair and suggest suitable surface harness. Take 24 teeth on
pinion and Modulus of Elasticity = 210 GPa.
OR
9 A pair of carefully cut (Class II) helical gears for a Turbine has a 20 L5 CO2
& transmission ratio of 10:1. The teeth are 20° stub involute in the
10 normal plane. Pinion has 25 teeth and rotates at 5000 rpm. Material
for pinion and gear is 0.4 % Carbon steel untreated. Determine the
module in normal plane, diametric plane and face width of the gear
pair. Suggest suitable hardness. Take Modulus of Elasticity = 210
GPa, Helix angle = 30 ° and power transmitted = 90 kW.
