SUBTRACTION OF INTEGERS

(+𝟒) − (−𝟒) = (+𝟖)

minuend subtrahend difference

Example : Study the following examples.

a) (+5) – (+3) = (+5) + (−3) = (+2)

b) (+10) – ( +12) = (+10) + (−12) = (−2)

c) (−14) – ( −11) = (−14) + (+11) = (−3)

d) (−20)– (−25) = (−20) + (+25) = (+5)

e) (+10) – (−4) = (+10) + (+4) = (+14)

f) (−30)– ( +10) = (−30) + (−10) = (−40)

g) (−7 )– (+7) = (−7) + (−7) = (−14)

h) 19 – ( −10) = 19 + (+10) = (+29)

i) 30 – ( +3) = 30 + (−3) = 27

In subrtaction we take the additive inverse of the subtrahend and add this
number to the minuend.
