Lesson 3 (SUBTRACTION OF INTEGERS)
Lesson 3 (SUBTRACTION OF INTEGERS)
i) 30 – ( +3) = 30 + (−3) = 27
In subrtaction we take the additive inverse of the subtrahend and add this
number to the minuend.
1
Example : Find the missing numbers.
(+10) − (+5) =
(+10) + (−5) = (+5) = (+5)
b) −(−8) = (+10)
minuend = Subtrahend + difference
(+18) + (−7) =
(+11)
(−17) + (−2) =
(−19)
(+3) − (−2) =
(+3) + (+2) =
(+5)

EXERCISES
1) Do the following operations.
a) (−32) − (+14) =
b) (+27)(−18) =
c) (−10) − (−17) =
a) (−14)− = (+8)
b) −(+15) = (−14)
c) (+10)− = (−16)
d) −(−13) = (+18)
4) In a certain subtraction operation, the subtrahend is (−10) and the difference is (+9).
Find the minuend.
5) In a certain subtraction operation, the minuend is (+11) and the difference is (−7).
Find the subtrahend .
