Foreword
This translation has been made based on the original Japanese Indus-
trial Standard revised by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry
through deliberations at the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee
as the result of proposal for revision of Japanese Industrial Standard
submitted by The Japan Iron and Steel Federation (JISF)/Japanese
Standards Association (JSA) with the draft being attached, based on the
provision of Article 12 clause 1 of the Industrial Standardization Law ap-
plicable to the case of revision by the provision of Article 14. Conse-
quently JIS G 3105:1987 is replaced with this Standard.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some parts of this Standard
may conflict with a patent right, application for a patent after opening t o
the public, utility model right or application for registration of utility
model after opening to the public which have technical properties. The
relevant Minister and Japanese Industrial Standards Committee are not
responsible for identifying the patent right, application for a patent after
opening t o the public, utility model right or application for registration of
utility model after opening to the public which have the said technical
properties.

JAPANESE INDUSTRIAL STANDARD @ JIS G 3105 : 2004
1 Scope This Japanese Industrial Standard specifies the hot rolled round steel bars
used for chains (hereinafter referred to as the "steel bars").
3 Types and symbol The steel bars shall be classified into three types, and their
symbols shall be as given in table 1.

6 Mechanical properties
6. 1 Tensile strength, elongation and contraction The steel bars shall be subjected t o
tests in accordance with 9.2, and their tensile strength, elongation, and contraction
shall conform to table 3 .
6.2 Bendability Steel bars shall be tested in accordance with 9.2 under test condi-
tions given in table 3, and cracks shall not be generated on its outside.
6.3 Charpy absorbed energy Steel bars shall be tested in accordance with 9.2 and
the charpy absorbed energy shall conform t o table 4. In this case, the charpy absorbed
energy shall be the average of three test pieces, which is judged in accordance with 9.6
in JIS G 0404.

7 Shape, dimensions, mass and tolerances The shape, dimensions, masses and tol-
erances of steel bars shall be in accordance with JIS G 3191.
9 Test
9.1 Analytical tests
9.1.1 General matters concerning the analytical test and the sampling method The
chemical composition of steel bars shall be obtained by the cast analysis, and the gen-
eral matters concerning the analytical test and the sampling method for the analytical
samples shall conform to clause 8 of JIS G 0404.
9.1.2 Methods of analysis The methods of analysis shall be in accordance with JIS G
0320.
9.2 Mechanical tests
9.2.1 Mechanical tests in general The general matters pertaining t o mechanical
tests shall be in accordance with clause 9 of JIS G 0404. In this case, the sampling of
test pieces shall be in accordance with class A of 7.6 of JIS G 0404, and the number of
test pieces and the sampling position shall be as follows:
--`,,,`,,``,`,`,`,```,,,```,,``-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---
a) Number of test pieces One tension test piece, one bending test piece and one set
of impact test pieces (three pieces) shall be sampled from the steel bar of the larg-
est diameter for each 50 t and its fraction of steel bars belonging to the same melt.
b) Method of sampling heat treatment specimens I n the case where the chains are to
be heat-treated after welding, the test pieces shall have the same cross section as
the base material, and be sampled from the test specimen which has been heat-
treated in advance by either of the methods given in table 3 as agreed on between
the parties concerned.
c) Sampling position of test piece The sampling position of a tension test piece shall
conform t o JIS G 0416.For the sampling position of an impact test piece, the center
of the test piece shall be taken a t a position of 1/4 the diameter from the surface.
When sampling of this position is impossible, a position as near that position as
possible shall be taken.
9.2.2 Test pieces The tension test pieces, bending test pieces and impact test pieces
shall be as follows:
a) Tension test pieces No. 14A or No. 2 test pieces of JIS Z 2201.
b) Bending test pieces No. 2 test pieces of JIS Z 2204.
c) Impact test pieces V-notch test pieces of JIS Z 2202.
9.2.3 Testing methods The methods of tension test, bending test and impact test
shall be as follows:
a) Method of tension test JIS Z 2241
b) Method of bending test JIS Z 2248
c> Method of impact test JIS Z 2242
10 Inspection
10.1 Inspection The inspection shall be as follows:
a) General matters of the inspection shall conform to JIS G 0404.
b) Chemical composition shall conform t o clause 5.
c) Mechanical properties shall conform to clause 6.
d) The shape, dimensions and mass shall conform to clause 7.
e) Appearance shall conform to clause 8.

11 Marking The steel bar which has passed the inspection shall be marked with the
following information by an appropriate method on each steel bar or on each bundle.
However, part of the following information may be omitted, as agreed on between the
purchaser and the manufacturer.
a) Type symbol
b) Heat number or inspection number
c) Dimensions
d) Manufacturer’s name or its abbreviation
12 Report The report shall conform to clause 13 in JIS G 0404. The manufacturer,
when requested, shall submit symbol 2.3 (acceptance test report) or 3.1.B (inspection
certificate 3.1.B) of table 1 (summary table of inspection document) in JIS G 0415 to
the purchaser.
Furthermore, in the case where the requirement of the remark of table 2 has been
conformed, the contents of added elements shall be stated i n the test results table.
