1. Answer All questions 2 x 10
a. What do you understand by macroscopic and microscopic viewpoints?

31
b. State the ‘Clausius’ statement for second law of thermodynamics.
c. Define fugacity.
d. Define enthalpy. How is it related to internal energy?

07
e. What do you understand by triple point?
f. Briefly explain the concept of COP.
g. What is a reversible process?
09
h. Differentiate between heat engine and heat pump.
i. Mention any two reference properties which are intensive.
04

j. What do you mean by state and path function?

2. Answer Any Six Questions 6x5
a. Steam supplied to an engine liberates 5000J of heat. The efficiency of the engine
57

is 40%. Find the height to which a body of mass 10kg can be lifted using the work
output from the engine.
b. Draw and explain the P-V-T behaviour of pure fluid.
c. Write a relation between pressure and volume in a Polytropic process. Also write
00

the value of ‘n’ each for isobaric, isochoric, adiabatic and isothermal process
d. Explain third law of thermodynamics.
e. Write a short note on refrigeration.
f. Draw the P-T diagram for a pure material and explain the phase behaviour.
g Discuss about triple point, critical temperature and critical pressure.
3 A balloon that was originally empty is being filled with hydrogen from a cylinder. 10
The atmospheric pressure is 1.01325bar. Estimate the work done by the balloon
cylinder system when the balloon attains a spherical shape 6 meter in diameter.

4 Calculate the change in internal energy, change in enthalpy, work done and the 10
heat supply in the following process
a) An ideal gas is expanded from 5bar to 4bar isothermally at 600K.
b) An ideal gas contains in a vessel of 0.1m3 capacity is initially at 1bar and 298K.
It is heated at constant volume to 400K
(Assume that Cp=30J/mol.K)
5 Mercury has a density of 13.69X103kg/m3 in the liquid state and 10
14.193X103kg/m3 in the solid state, both measures at the melting point of
234.33K at 1bar. If the heat of fusion of mercury is 9.7876kJ/kg, what is the

31
melting point of mercury at 10bar?
6 Calculate the vapour pressure of water at 363K, if the vapour pressure at 373K is 10
101.3kPa. The mean heat of vaporization in this temperature range is 2275kJ/kg.
7 A system consisting of a gas confined in cylinder is undergoing the following 10

07
processes before it is brought back to initial condition :
Step-1: Constant pressure process when it receives 50J of work and gives up 25J
of heat
Step-2: A constant volume process when it receives 75J of heat
09
Step:3: An adiabatic process ( No exchange of heat between system and
surroundings)
Determine change in internal energy in each step and work done during the
adiabatic process)
