Coat of Arms Project

Purpose: Since a knight in full armor could not be recognized, a loose coat of
distinctive design
was worn over armor; this coat became known as the coat of arms. This design was
later
transferred to the warriors shield and eventually all of his possessions, including rings.
The rings
could be pressed into soft wax and used as a seal for documents.
Terms:
field surface of the shield
-

charges symbols placed upon the shield

-

• lions were a favorite charge in English heraldry

• fleur-de-lis were popular in France
• other popular charges: eagles, unicorns, dragons, fish, trees, flowers, castles, musical
instruments, etc.
Assignment: You must create your own coat of arms on an 8 1/2” x 11” sheet of paper.
