1. Indian Market

1.1 Introduction:

India is currently the world's second-largest telecommunications market, with 1.16 billion
subscribers, and has had rapid expansion over the last decade. According to a report
developed by the GSM Association (GSMA) in partnership with Boston Consulting Group,
India's mobile economy is fast increasing and will contribute significantly to the country's
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (BCG). In 2019, India overtook the United States as the
second-largest market for app downloads.

1.2 Market size:

In February 2021, the total number of internet customers climbed from 757.61 million in
January to 765.09 million. There were 22.26 million wired internet subscribers and 742.84
million wireless internet subscribers among this subscriber base.
India also has the second-largest telecoms market in the world. In February 2021, the
country's total subscriber base was 1187.9 million.
In the third quarter of FY21, the telecom sector's gross revenue was Rs. 68,228 crore (US$
9.35 billion).
In India, rising mobile phone penetration and falling data costs will add 500 million
additional internet users over the next five years, opening up new commercial options.

2. Major players in telecom sector in India:

2.1 Bharati Airtel – The smartphone network:

Bharti Airtel Limited is a global telecommunications leader with operations in 16 Asian and
African countries. The company's headquarters are in New Delhi, India. In terms of
subscribers, the company is among the top three mobile service providers in the world. 2G,
3G, and 4G wireless services, mobile commerce, fixed line services, high-speed home
internet, DTH, and enterprise services, including national and international long-distance
services to carriers, are among the company's product offerings in India. It provides 2G, 3G,
and 4G wireless services as well as mobile commerce in the remaining geographies.
2.2 Reliance Jio Infocomm – Jio Digital Life:
Reliance Jio is a whole ecosystem that allows Indians to fully embrace the digital world.
Powerful broadband networks, helpful applications, best-in-class services, and smart devices
are all part of this ecosystem, which is disseminated to every home in India. Jio's media
offerings include the largest libraries and programming of recorded and live music, sports,
live and on-demand television, movies, and events. Jio is about connecting 6 billion brains
around the world to unleash the power of a youthful nation. Jio has been able to create an
integrated business strategy from the start, thanks to its three-pronged focus on broadband
networks, affordable smartphones, and the availability of rich content and applications.
Today, Jio is capable of offering a unique combination of telecom, high-speed data, digital
commerce, media, and payment services.

2.3 BSNL (Bharati Sanchar Nigam Limited) – connecting India faster:


BSNL is a technology-driven corporation that offers wireline, wireless local loop (WLL), and
mobile phone services, as well as broadband, internet, leased circuits, and long-distance
telecom services. With a 100 percent digital technology switching network, the organization
has been at the forefront of technology. All district headquarters, sub-divisional headquarters,
Tehsil headquarters, and practically all block headquarters are covered by BSNL's nationwide
telecommunications network. It had around 29.63 million basic telephone lines, 1.39 million
WLL capacity, 114.62 million GSM capacity, 31,611 fixed exchanges, 1,46,172 GSM BTSs,
95 Satellite Stations, 8,49,990 route kilometers (RKm) of OFC, and 2,548 RKm of
microwave network capacity as of April 2019.

2.4 Vodafone Idea (V!):


Idea Cellular and Vodafone India announced their merger in March 2017. In July 2018, the
Department of Telecommunications approved the merger. The Vodafone-Idea merger
received final approval from the National Company Law Tribunal on August 30, 2018. On
August 31, 2018, the merger was completed, and the newly formed company was named
Vodafone Idea Limited. As a result of the merger, India now has the largest telecom firm in
terms of users and revenue. The Vodafone Group will own 45.2 percent of the combined
firm, the Aditya Birla Group will own 26 percent, and the remaining shares will be held by
the general public.
Following the merger, Vi lost a considerable number of gross and active subscribers in
August 2020.
Vodafone Idea Limited operated two distinct brands till September 7, 2020:
Vodafone - GSM service provider that offers both postpaid and prepaid options.
Idea - comparable to Vodafone Prepaid, a prepaid GSM service.
Vi also offers services such as mobile payments, IoT, enterprise offerings, and entertainment,
which are available through both digital and on-ground touch points at locations across the
country.
Vi has a 340,000-site internet network and 1.7 million retail establishments in its distribution
network.

3. Global Market

3.1 Introduction:

Apple, AT&T, Verizon Communications, China Mobile, and Samsung are all major players
in the worldwide telecoms business. In 2018, Apple Inc. was the top competitor in the
telecoms sector, accounting for around 6% of the market.
Based on revenue in 2020, the top telecommunications companies in the globe. The
American corporation AT&T was the top telecommunications operator in the world in 2020,
with sales of roughly 161.5 billion euros. Verizon, an American firm, was the second-largest
operator, with sales of 117.5 billion euros.

3.2 Market size:


According to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc., the worldwide telecom services
industry is predicted to reach USD 2.47 trillion by 2028. From 2021 to 2028, it is predicted to
grow at a CAGR of 5.4 percent. The demand for telecom services is primarily driven by
increased investment on next-generation wireless communication infrastructures as a result of
a shift in client preferences toward the 5G network and cloud-based technology.
In addition, rising demand for high-speed data connectivity, the rapid spread of digitalization
around the world, and the explosion of consumer-generated multimedia content via Over-
The-Top (OTT) apps are all projected to contribute considerably to the industry's growth.

4. Major global players in telecom sector:

4.1 China mobile:


China Mobile has a GSM network that covers all 31 provinces, autonomous areas, and
directly governed municipalities in China, as well as Hong Kong. For data transfer, GPRS is
used.
4.2 AT & T Inc.:
AT&T Inc. is a Delaware-registered American multinational conglomerate holding
corporation with its headquarters in Downtown Dallas, Texas. It is the largest
telecommunications corporation in the world, as well as the largest provider of mobile phone
services in the United States. With $181 billion in revenue in 2020, AT&T was rated 9th on
the Fortune 500 list of the largest American firms.
4.3 Verizon Communications:
Verizon Communications Inc. is a telecommunications corporation based in the United States
that is a Dow Jones Industrial Average component. The corporation is incorporated in
Delaware and has its headquarters at 1095 Avenue of the Americas in Midtown Manhattan,
New York City.
4.4 Américan Móvil:
América Móvil, headquartered in Mexico City, is a Mexican telecommunications company. It
is the world's ninth largest mobile network provider by equity customers and one of the
world's largest enterprises. América Móvil is a member of the Forbes Global 2000. América
Móvil had 277.4 million cellular subscribers and 84.3 million fixed revenue generating units
(RGUs), which include fixed phone, fixed broadband, and Pay TV units, as of the first
quarter of 2019.
4.5 Telefónica:
Telefónica S.A. is a multinational telecommunications firm based in Madrid, Spain. It is one
among the world's largest telephone companies and mobile network providers. It operates in
Europe and the Americas, providing fixed and mobile telephony, broadband, and subscription
television.

It also goes by the names Movistar, O2 and Vivo in addition to Telefónica. The Euro Stoxx
50 stock market index includes the corporation.
4.6 Telstra:
Telstra Corporation Limited is an Australian telecommunications business that sells phone,
mobile, internet access, pay television, and other products and services. It is a constituent of
the S&P/ASX 20 index and the largest telecommunications firm in Australia by market share.
With 18.8 million users as of 2020, Telstra is Australia's largest telecom carrier.
4.7 Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public corporation (NTT):
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation was established as a state monopoly in
August 1952 to take over the Japanese telecommunications system operated by AT&T during
the Occupation of Japan [citation needed]. It was privatized in 1985 to encourage competition
in the country's telecom market. NTT completed the largest stock offering in history in 1987,
with a valuation of US$36.8 billion. 
4.8 Deutsche Telekom:
Deutsche Telekom AG is a German telecommunications corporation based in Bonn that is
Europe's largest telecoms provider by revenue. The former state-owned monopoly Deutsche
Bundespost was privatized in 1995, resulting in the formation of Deutsche Telekom.
Deutsche Telekom has been a Fortune 500 company since its privatization, with the most
recent position of 86 in 2020. T-Mobile, a mobile communications brand, is one of the
company's many subsidiaries around the world.
The German government owns 14.5 percent of corporate equity directly and 17.4 percent
through the government bank KfW as of April 2020.
The stock market index EURO STOXX 50 includes the company.
