Covid Statistics

The first wave of Covid-19 in Malaysia.

Malaysia announced its first Covid-19 cases on 25 January 2020 involving three China tourist who had
entered Malaysia via Johor from Singapore on Jan 23. The number of cases then rose to 22 by Feb 16,
representing first wave of cases.

The second wave of Covid-19 started on Feb 27.

The biggest cluster was the Seri Petaling cluster, involving a religious gatheing held at a mosque in
Kuala Lumpur. It was attended by about 14,500 Malaysians and some 1,500 foreigners. This cluster
recorded a total of 3,375 infections and spawned 17 sub-clusters.

close supervision by authorities as it was placed under enhanced MCO. - May 7, 2020.

The Third Wave of Covid-19 in Malaysia

Sabah saw a sharp increase in cases since Sept 7 due to the Benteng Jahad Datu cluster. More cases
were then traced at the Tawau prison, after several inmates with travel history to Lahad Datu tested
positive.

The Sabah state election was held on Sept 26 and since then, many of those returning from the state
has tested positive for Covid-19.

New cases of Covid-19 in Sabah began when to illegal migrants were detained at Lahad Datu District
Police headquarters lockup, Sabah on Aug-24, 2020 and later tested positive for Covid-19 on August
31.

Known as the Benteng LD cluster, a total of 1.015 (6.2%) people have tested positive as at Oct 13 out of
the 16,408 people screened. Out of the 7,540 new Covid-19 cases recorded in the country since Sept 1,
62% are from Sabah.
Selangor residents who returned from Sabah queuing to get free Covid-19 screening at clinics in
Puchong. The Selangor state government provided free Covid-19 screening for residents who returned
from Sabah before the federal government imposed mandatory screening at airports.

A new cluster named Tembok cluster later emerged on Sept 30 following the death of a 46-year-old
man who had worked at a prison in Alor Setar, Kedah. A Covid-19 test after his death found the man to
been infected with the virus. Since then, the cluster has recorded 1,334 cases, which make up 96% of
the total cases in the state.

While the number of cases is expected to continue to rise in the near future due to increased number of
Covid-19 tests, the country has to ramp up long term efforts to lower the Rt to below 1.0 in order to
contain the spread of the virus in the country.

Rt : Rate of infectivity at a given time or “effective” reproduction number.

Kuantan : Schools in the area have been given the green light by the Pahang Education Department to
temporarily close down schools if the COVID-19 cases reaches a level considered unhealthy following
the third wave infection. Its Director said that heads of the affected schools have the authority to make
the decision whenever deemed right to safeguard the students’ safety.

Dear John,

How are you? I hope you are in hale and hearty condition. I received your letter yesterday
and felt the urgency to give you an early reply. The unprecedented global pandemic that has
impacted greatly on everyone is rather worrying. When you seek my advice on whether to stay at
home or go back to school, I immediately pen this down for you.

Covid-19 is caused by SARS-COV2 virus, which originated from Wuhan China and it has become
a global concern. Symptoms can take up to 14 days to surface and it is very infectious. People who
are at risk are the old people and young children.

Among the symptoms which we need to look out for is fever, dry cough and fatigue or tiredness.
Since it does not have any available vaccine as cure, I suggest that you stay at home and study for
your SPM.

If we take note of the news daily, the third wave of infection is stronger than ever and the effects
are definitely on public health, education and economy. The frontliners are combating to contain
the virus from spreading and school children need to take extra precaution during school time.
About our country’s economy, the government has put in a lot of effort to sustain it by launching the
PRIHATIN Economic Stimulus Package and helping the people on loan moratorium to ease
therir financial burden. Hence, you should stay at home and study online.

Even though we are safe at home, we need to play our part to prevent the contagious disease.
Wash your hand frequently and wear mask whenever we are outside. We should also be reminded to
practise physical distancing. Another important point is don’t touch our eyes, nose or mouth
regularly. If you are unwell, stay at home and do self-quarantine.

I am sorry as I have to pen off now. Take care of yourself and we will see each other in the
coming future. Please remember to take good care of your parents.
Your best friend,

Leong

2. “Online learning enables teachers and students to set their own learning pace.” How far do you
agree ? Explain why.

The concept of traditional classroom learning has changed radically over the last couple of years
and online learning has exponentially increased during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Being
physically present in a classroom does not seem to be an option during this time. With the rise of
internet and technologies, students can access to quality education whenever and wherever they
want. This is the food for thought for everyone as we are now entering a new era : the
revolution of online education. However, does online learning enables teachers and students to set
their own learning pace ? Below are my arguments.

First and foremost, it is flexible. teachers and students can set their own schedule that fits
everyone’s agenda. Therefore, both parties do not need to give anything up and study according to
the learning pace at the comfort of their own homes. This can help to improve the students time
management skills too.

Secondly, learning online is more organised and systematic. Teachers and students will meet at
certain prefixed time and everything online can be recorded. The recorded video can be used to
evaluate and plan for the next course of improvement actions. There will be lesser mishandling of
homework and notes where students and teachers can share on everything the same platform.

Online learning tools such as Zoom and Google Classroom has a wide selection of functions and
options. It can help to set the students’ learning pace. Test can be conducted and if a student could
not pass the test, the student can retake the test again anytime to improve themselves. There is also
a function where Google Form can mark the objective questions automatically, hence reducing
teachers’ marking time.

Online learning can be accessible everywhere, as long as you have internet. Hence, this option
will help both teachers and students to learn according to the pace they want. For some remote
areas, if there is no internet access, teachers can give more time for those students to complete their
task. They can access the internet facilities in school or public libraries.

Furthermore, it is more cost effective than traditional education. Even though there is cost for
internet subscription, internet cost is rather affordable in Malaysia. If we compare with transportation
and other miscellaneous cost, internet cost is just a small fraction of them. With online learning, we
can customize learning experience at our own pace with a small fraction of price.

As a conclusion, despite all the benefits on online learning, there are also disadvantages in every
aspect. Students will not be able to have social interaction and public speaking skills if online
learning keeps looming among the students. Otherwise, I think online education is a good course to
consider.
