IAS101 - INFORMATION ASSURANCE AND SECURITY 1
SEMINAR REPORT

“Awareness Campaign on Republic Act 10175 otherwise known as Cybercrime Prevention Act
of 2012”

The webinar’s speaker is Ma’am Noemi S. Rosales, Faculty, College of Criminology and Criminal
Justice. She earned the degree of BS Criminology as cum laude and also, she was best thesis during
her times. She graduated master of science criminal justice with the specialization in criminology in
Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation. And speaker is also a member of the Philippine
criminology association of the Philippines, she also the members of Philippine society of
criminologists and criminal justice professionals and she also written books and researches in the
field of criminology. Ma’am Noemi is also a resource speaker, trainer and commentator in digital
investigative plan, cyber incidents response and a trainer of trainees of cybercrime investigation
course program way back in 20019, and so on.
And her objectives are about Barangay awareness on cybercrime and the cybercrime laws and
incident response. And in my perspective, she is interested in the topic because she was obviously
eligible and knowledgeable about the topic according to her profession.

As some of us are aware of the Interpol assessment report if the cybercrime landscape due to the
pandemic of COVID that includes online scams, Phishing-threats to those individuals, small
businesses, major corporations, government and critical health infrastructures. Since a lot of
businesses are deploying remotely to support their staffs who work from home. And this is the
opportunity that criminals will take advantage of the security vulnerabilities to steal personal data from
the users. Cyber criminals will take advantage of the situation of covid-19 pandemic.
And as we all know today, we are all living in a digital world that we cannot deny just like before that
devices like mobile phones as additional accessories. But this time, having mobile devices and
connected to the internet is one of the necessities of our daily routine. Using devices such as mobile
and computer that are connected thru internet has a lot of advantages, but as good as the internet
may sound, unfortunately for the cybercrime investigators, internet was made for robustness and
redundancy rather than security and traceability. As cybercriminals tend to invade the cyberspace
how can we say that we are one of as cybercrime victim or target. And with that we should know
those punishable acts under the RA 10175.

For me the conducted seminar is very useful, because it gives information and knowledge to the
people who attended the webinar about being cautious in the internet world. I can really relate with
the webinar because the webinar also discussed about the offenses against confidentiality, integrity,
and availability of computer data and system, that also discussed in our class discussion in IAS 101.
The speaker also showed some videos about cybercrimes that happened here in the Philippines, that
can maybe serve as a lesson or warning to the attendees to be more cautious and vigilant in using
the social media and websites. Maybe working in the field of cybercrime investigation is the future
work that suits in this topic.

In conclusion, I have learned a lot in this webinar, I learned those punishments for those
cybercriminals, I learned different kinds of threats that I may encounter in cyberspace. The seminar
also gives me a lesson about not to trust easily on what I saw, hear and read in the social media and
websites. It also made me start being suspicious on the identities of other people that I encounter in
my social media accounts. I also learned that posting daily activities can may attract cybercriminals
attention that would lead you be the target of those criminals. And also, the speaker gives a low-key
advice to cover the webcam of laptop, computer about the possible of devices being remotely
controlled by the criminals.
The speaker also showed some of tools to use such as the Forensic Toolkit (FTK), Magnet Forensics
and the Dumpit. This topic is very important in public sbecause this kind of topic gives a lot of

important lesson and information to the people that who are not familiar with the cyber threats that
they might encounter. This work makes a significant contribution on the awareness and safety of the
users inside the Cyberspace against the Cyber Criminals.
