ZEROS OF POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION

Activity

Directions: Find the zeros of the following function.

1) f (x) = x2 - 7x + 10

Solution:
f (x) = x2 - 7x + 10
= (x - 5) (x - 2)
x-5=0 x-2=0 The zeros are: ( 5, 2)

X=5 x=2

2) f (x) = x3 + 5x2 + 6x

Solution:
f (x) = x3 + 5x2 + 6x
= x (x2 + 5x + 6)
= x (x + 2) (x + 3)

x=0 x+2=0 x+3=0 The zeros are: (0, - 2, -3)

x=-2 x=-3

Directions: Determine Whether the following are zeros of the polynomial function.

f (x) = x4 - 13x2 + 12x

3) 0

Solution:
f (x) = x4 - 13x2 + 12x
f (0) = (0)4 - 13 (0)2 + 12 (0)
= 0 - 13 (0) + 0
=0-0+0
f (0) = 0 it is a zero of a given polynomial function
4) 1
Solution:
f (x) = x4 - 13x2 + 12 x
f (1) = (1)4 - 13 (1)2 + 12 (1)
= 1 - 13 (1) + 12
= 1 - 13 + 12
= - 12 + 12
f (1) = 0 it is a zero of a given polynomial function

5) - 3

Solution:
f (x) = x4 - 13x2 + 12 x
f (-3) = (-3)4 - 13 (-3)2 + 12 (-3)
= 81 - 13 (9) - 36
= 81 - 117 - 36
= - 36 - 36
f (-3) = - 72 is not a zero of the polynomial function

Analysis

Why are the zeros of polynomial function important?

Finding roots of a polynomial is an extremely important work in Applied Maths because
many problems need an ordinary linear differential equation to be solve.

Abstraction

What are the steps to get the Zeros of Polynomial Function?

Application

Directions: Find the zeros of the following polynomial function.

1) x3 + x2 - 5x - 2
2) x3 + 8x2 + 11x - 20
3) x5 + x4 - 9x3 - x2 + 20x - 12

Direction: Determine Whether the following are zeros of the polynomial function.

x3 + x2 - 10x + 8
4) 1
5) 2
6) - 2
7) 4

IV. Evaluation

1) f (x) = x4 - 8x3 + 20x2 - 12x - 9

2) f (x) = 3x3 - 19x2 + 33x + 9
3) f (x) = 2(x - 3/2)(x - √2)(x + √2)

V. Assignment

Directions: Find the zeros of the following polynomial function.

1) f (x) = x2 - 8x - 9
2) f (x) = - x2 + 4x - 5
3) f (x) = (x2 - 1)(x + 2)(x2 + 6x +9)
4) f (x) = (x2 + 5x -7)(x +2)
5) f (x) = x5 - 2x4 + 8x2 - 13x + 6
