BANGLADESH GAS FIELDS COMPANY LTD (BGFCL)

BGFCL is the state owned largest natural gas producing organizations of

Bangladesh. It is located at Birashahar, Brahmanbaria-3400 (23°59'01.3"N and
91°05'58.8"E), which is about 100 kilometer away from the capital of the country.
Its main focus is to produce natural gas, pipeline conditioning and supplying to the
gas transmission system. BGFCL currently contributing 31% of the country’s total
natural gas demand. It also contributes largely to the demand of liquid fuel by
processing condensate which is a byproduct of natural gas and turn them into Motor
Spirit (MS) and high speed diesel (HSD). It has 6 gas fields named Titas gas field,
Habiganj, Bakhrabad, Narsingdi, Meghna & Kamta. Among these, except kamta,
rest of the fields are currently producing gas. Kamta is suspended due to excessive
water production.

Although it is a state owned company, its main customers are also state owned
organizations. It sells and supplies its produced gas only to 3 major company named
Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited (TGTDCL), Gas
Transmission Company Limited (GTCL) and Jalalabad Gas Transmission and
Distribution System Limited (JGTDSL).

Another two big name in oil and gas sector of Bangladesh is Bangladesh
Petroleum Exploration (BAPEX) and Sylhet Gas Field Limited (SGFL). BAPEX
was initially introduced to run only exploration operation but they were also handed
over some producing well by BGFCL according to the order of the Government.
Comparing to these two companies, BGFCL more number of wells (out of 52,
number of active well is 43) with a number of gas processing plant whether SGFL
has 5 fields and 13 producing gas well and BAPEX has 6 gas fields. So BGFCL is
way ahead than its competitors.
The demand of natural gas in Bangladesh is increasing at a tremendous rate.
According to the Govt. analysis, Bangladesh has a demand of 3200 MMSCFD gas
whereas only 2700 MMSCFD gas supplied from the gas producing companies.
BGFCL is supplying 78% of the gas produced by the state owned companies.
According to the data of BGFCL, they have an average production of 796.2
MMSCFD gas and 533.16 barrel of condensate. In comparison with other
competitive companies, BAPEX is currently producing 110 MMSCFD gas and
SGFL is producing about 127 MMSCFD gas.

One of the challenges that BGFCL has faced is the gas seepage occurred in
well no. 3 of Titas gas field which has wasted huge amount of gas in almost 3 years.
Finally this well had no way to recover and has to be plugged and abundant.

At present both the reservoir pressure and wellhead pressure at various fields
of the Company is declining at a certain rate. So within 2/3 years, the decline of
pressure will continue as production keeps running, under the circumstances,
installation of gas compressors will be required with the existing processing facilities
within 2/3 years to continue gas production by raising pressure at the level of
national gas grid. Since 2007 gas production from Bakhrabad field has been kept
continuing by raising pressure with Booster Compressor on rental basis. A project
has been taken for installation of Gas Compressor on procurement basis at Titas &
Narsingdi Field to continue gas production with the financial assistance of JICA.

The company has a mission to meet the country’s growing demand of natural
gas by implementing development projects, then to maintain uninterrupted and
sustainable gas supply by improving surface facilities and developing skilled
workforce to face challenges in adapting new technologies. The company’s vision
is to be the leading strategic producer of natural gas and its byproduct.
