PHOTOVOLTAIC GLASS FOR

BUILDINGS
APRIL 2020
ONYX SOLAR: ABOUT

▪ Year of Establishment: 2009

▪ Ownership: Privately held. VC on board
▪ Headquarters: Avila, Spain
▪ Production Plant: Avila, Spain
▪ Annual Production Capacity: 250,000 m2
▪ Tech. Manufactured: Amorphous (a-Si) and Crystalline
Silicon (C-Si)
▪ Projects completed: +350 in 5 continents.
▪ Accredited installers: +750 all over the world.
Photovoltaic (PV) Glass
Architectural glass that not only provides the building with the
same passive properties as a conventional glazing, it also
generates free electricity from the sun.
It is therefore, the only building material available in the
market that provides your building a return on the investment.

AMORPHOUS CRYSTALLINE
SILICON SILICON
AMORPHOUS
· Coating over a layer of flat glass (CVD)

· Visual Light Tr: Dark, 10, 20, 30%

· Efficiency 2.8% - 5.76%
· Greater energy production (kWh) at the
same installed power (kWp)

· Better behavior under the presence of

shadows / overcast (tilt, orientation)

· Low temperature coefficient – performs

well under high temperature

· Unobstructed views
CRYSTALLINE
· Mono and Polycrystalline

· Square solar cells with a

dimension of 12 or 15 cm.

· Efficiency 15% - 18%

· Greater nominal power per

square meter (Wp/Sqm)

· Produces more electricity under

direct sunlight

· Flexibility in functional design -

Glass is personalized to the specific
requirements of each project.

We manufacture the largest

photovoltaic glass in the market
(4 x 2 m).
SIZE, SHAPE AND COLORS
Sizes
AMORPHOUS
Photovoltaic glass can be
normally manufactured in a
variety of sizes.

Amorphous silicon: sizes usually

range from 1245mm x 635 mm up
to 4000x2000 mm, but glass can
be personalized to the specific
requirements of each project. Transparency

Rectangular and irregular shapes

available (the irregular shapes
are not recommended for the
amorphous silicon).

A wide range of colors –up to

1.500-.
SIZE, SHAPE AND COLORS
CRYSTALLINE Sizes

Crystalline silicon typical maximum

size is of approximately 4000 mm x
2000 mm but glass can be
personalized to the specific
requirements of each project.
Crystalline silicon glass-on-glass units
can also provide interesting design
options through different shapes.
While the rectangular is the most
frequent, trapezoids and non-
regular shapes are also available.
Crystalline silicon is composed of
solid opaque photovoltaic cells that
are not customizable (the cell have
standard sizes of 12 or 15 cm. ).

The spacing of the cells, however, is

customizable, which is how the
transparency is accomplished with
the crystalline units.

SOURCES & HYPOTHESIS
With the objetive of studying the economic and finantial feasibility of the investment, our finantial departament has calculated:

- The net investment to add photovoltaic properties to your constructing solution.

In other words, the price difference between the solar pv glass and a conventional glass, plus the electric installation cost. In this case the conventional glass and the electric
installation costs have been estimated in:
- Double Skin/ Spandrel: conventional glass cost of 11,850 INR/sqm. Source: Saint Gobain. Electric installation cost of 27.5 INR/Wp for the amorphous glass and 22.5 INR/Wp for
the crystalline glass.
- Curtain Wall: conventional glass cost of 17,274 INR/sqm. Source: Saint Gobain. Electric installation cost of 35.9 INR/Wp for the amorphous glass and 25 INR/Wp for the crystalline
glass.
- Canopy: conventional glass cost of 11,850 INR/sqm. Source: Saint Gobain. Electric installation cost of 27.5 INR/Wp for the amorphous glass and 22.5 INR/Wp for the crystalline
glass.
- Skylight: conventional glass cost of 17,024 INR/sqm. Source: Saint Gobain. Electric installation cost of 35.9 INR/Wp for the amorphous glass and 25 INR/Wp for the crystalline
glass.
- Balustrade: conventional glass cost of 17,691.4 INR/sqm. Source: Saint Gobain. Electric installation cost of 35.9 INR/Wp for the amorphous glass and 25 INR/Wp for the crystalline
glass.
- Floor: conventional glass cost of 17,524.5 INR/sqm for the amorphous glass and 20,779 INR/sqm for the crystalline glass. Source: Saint Gobain. Electric installation cost of
27.5 INR/Wp for the amorphous glass and 22.5 INR/Wp for the crystalline glass.
- Brise Soleil: conventional glass cost of 11,850 INR/sqm. Source: Saint Gobain. Electric installation cost of 27.5 INR/Wp for the amorphous glass and 22.5 INR/Wp for the crystalline
glass.
- Fins: conventional glass cost of 11,850 INR/sqm. Source: Saint Gobain. Electric installation cost of 27.5 INR/Wp for the amorphous glass and 22.5 INR/Wp for the crystalline glass.
The electric installation cost is a provisional estimation that has been calculated considering different sources, and does not mean any contractual obligation.

In order to calculate the values that appear in the feasibiliy study, it have been used the following formulas:

- Light points = (electricity generated in the 1st year x 1,000)/12/4/365.

- It has been estimated with energy efficiency 12 W light bulbs working 4 hours per day.
- Kilometres in an electric car = electricity generated in 35 years x 5.75. Source: US Department of Energy.

- CO2 emissions avoided = electricity generated in 35 years x 0.856. Source: IEA.

- Number of times that the investment is recovered = (Value of the electricity generated in 35 years + incentives) / investment
- Electricity price: 8.02 INR/kWh. Source: BSES.

- Incentives obtained: accelerated depreciation of the 40% of the investment in renewable energies.

- Change rate(02/04/2020): 1€ = 83.45 INR

· The change rate is orientative and does not mean any contractual obligation.

- 1 $ of energy saved increases the value of the building up to 20 $. Source: US Department of Energy & Environment:

- The electricity generated value is just a preliminary estimate only, and does not imply any kind of guarantee. Factors such as, but not limited to, surrounding shadows, self-
shades or other external aspects have not been taking into account. These factors might lead to reduction in energy production. In addition, other potential losses due to BOS
are also excluded from these calculations. The calculation has been done using PVWATTS and PVSYST in pre-design mode.
