Concept Narrative

The Wooster Square public art installation will honor the

experience and contributions of Italian Americans in New
Haven from the first arrivals until today. Our hope is that this
project can also inspire curiosity about the broader impact
Italian Americans have had in the country, as well as what
our future history will be.

For the project’s interpretive elements, we envision that text

and photographs will interweave across poly-chromatic
printed aluminum panels. The double-sided panels will be
framed with durable steel and bronze assemblies mounted
to simple sub-surface concrete footings. The ornamental Printed Aluminum Panels at CCSU,
nature of the metal frames will mirror the historic character designed by Marissa Mead
of Wooster Square’s architecture, reflecting the principal
time period of Italian American migration to the
neighborhood.

We envision that the narrative panels will be arranged at

each of the four corners or sides of the historic stone
pedestal, responding to the pedestal in their shape and
location. Perhaps the panels form a radial pattern to indicate
a sense of energy and movement to and from the central
sculpture (diagrams p3). Or perhaps single-sided panels form
gentle curved shapes, embracing the viewer (diagrams p4.)
We envision paving that responds to the panel formation,
and, in keeping with our studios’ method of collaborative
engagement, we will review several possibilities with the
committee for the final design, shape, and configuration of
the panels and landscape elements.

While the narrative panels will outline the evolution of the

Italian American experience in New Haven, our essential
Woolsey Hall Display Cases,
vision for the monument sculpture is that it should inspire designed by Ioana Barac
our collective hope for the future.

Immigration is a story of the first generation of travelers, and

a story of their children and grandchildren – each generation
representing a resurgence in hope for a joyful, triumphant
future. It is this story – the story of generational hope – that
was fundamental to the Italian American experience and that
resonates with many of our neighbors in New Haven.

Who will the next grandchildren of Wooster Square become?

What will they achieve together?

We will prepare options to review with the committee for the

final rendition of this piece. Perhaps, the embodiment of our
hope is contained in an allegorical figure such as a rising bird
or branching tree. Or perhaps two Italian American parents
stand with a child reaching out toward a future unknown. Or
perhaps, we find a group of youthful figures, linked arm in arm
Liberty Sculpture, in an outward facing circle, taking a defiant yet anticipatory
Skylight Studios stance toward the world – the millisecond of repose before a
great leap.

Additionally there is an opportunity to replace the square

plaque previously installed on the south side of the
pedestal, which we believe should be cast in bronze to
coordinate with the sculpture and narrative panels.
Stone ‘Columbus’ text can be removed or replaced if
desired by the committee.

For maximum durability, and in keeping with materials

appropriate to Wooster Square, the sculpture and plaque will
be cast in bronze. The sculpture and the narrative panels will
coordinate in their materiality to work cohesively in this multi-
Hilgenhurst Plaque, component installation.
