3.42. Refer to Problem 3.26.
a) If we wish to detect a maximum difference in battery life of 10 hours with a
probability of at least 0.90, what sample size should be used? Discuss how you would
obtain a preliminary estimate of _2 for answering this question.
b) If the difference between brands is great enough so that the standard deviation of an
observation is increased by 25 percent, what sample size should be used if we wish
to detect this with a probability of at least 0.90?

Problem 3.26
a. Test and CI for One Variance: brand 1, brand 2, brand 3

Choose n ≥ 6, therefore N ≥ 18

Power and Sample Size

One-way ANOVA

Alpha = 0.05 Assumed standard deviation = 3.95

Factors: 1 Number of levels: 3

Maximum Sample
Difference Size Power
10 5 0.891328
10 6 0.951560
10 7 0.979516
10 8 0.991703
10 9 0.996759

The sample size is for each level.

b. Test and CI for One Variance

Choose n ≥ 8, therefore N ≥ 24

Power and Sample Size

One-way ANOVA
Alpha = 0.05 Assumed standard deviation = 3.95

Factors: 1 Number of levels: 3

Maximum Sample
Difference Size Power
8 5 0.713014
8 6 0.815601
8 7 0.885343
8 8 0.930660
8 9 0.959056

The sample size is for each level.

3.43. Consider the experiment in Problem 3.26. If we wish to construct a 95 percent
confidence interval on the difference in two mean battery lives that has an accuracy
of 2 weeks, how many batteries of each brand must be tested?

One-Sample T: BRAND 1, BRAND 2, BRAND 3

α = 0.05 MSE = 15.6

width

Trial and Error yields:

N υ2 t width
5 12 2.179 5.44
10 27 2.05 3.62
31 90 1.99 1.996
32 93 1.99 1.96

Choose n ≥ 31, therefore N ≥ 93

3.44. Suppose that four normal populations have means of µ1 = 50, µ2 = 60, µ3 = 50, dan
µ4 = 60. How many observations should be taken from each population so that the
probability of rejecting the null hypothesis of equal population means is at least
0.90? Assume that α = 0.05 and that a reasonable estimate of the error variance
is σ2 = 25.

Therefore, select n ≥ 9

Power and Sample Size

One-way ANOVA

Alpha = 0.05 Assumed standard deviation = 5

Factors: 1 Number of levels: 4

Maximum Sample
Difference Size Power
10 8 0.893598
10 9 0.932577
10 10 0.958186

The sample size is for each level.
