Experiment #1A: Creating a New Document

Procedure:

1. Start Microsoft Word 2013.


You should see a screen that looks like this:

2. Click Blank Document.

You should see a screen that looks like this:

3. In the blank document, type: Cooking Chicken at the top of the page.

4. Press the Enter key on your keyboard twice.

5. Type: Before cooking chicken, dry it first!

6. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.

7. Type: This enables it to brown in the pan. Then press Enter.


The document should look like this:

8. Type: Use a kitchen towel to remove surface moisture. Then press Enter.

9. Type: It gets crispy on the outside. Then press Enter.

10. Type: The inside remains tender. The document should look like this:

Experiment #1B: Saving the document

Procedure:

1. In the Ribbon, click the Save icon.

2. When the Save As window appears, click Computer. Then click Desktop.

3. When the Save As window appears, type: Cooking Chicken in the File Name box.

4. Click the Save button.

Experiment #1C: Cut, copy and paste

Procedure:

1. Click at the beginning of the words: Use a kitchen towel to remove surface moisture.

2. Holding your mouse button down, drag over the words to highlight them.

3. Make sure the Home tab is selected. In the Ribbon, click the Cut icon.

4. Click at the beginning of the words This enables it to brown in the pan...
...to place the cursor there.

5. In the Ribbon, click the Paste icon.

Your document should now look like this:

6. In the Ribbon, click Select, then Select All.

7. Click the Copy icon.

8. Click the File tab.

9. Then click New.

10. When the New screen appears, double-click Blank Document.

A new window should appear, containing a new blank document:

11. In the Ribbon, click the Paste icon. All the text from the document Cooking Chicken
should appear in the new document:

12. Click the Save icon to save the new document.

13. Save the document as Cooking Chicken Copy on the desktop.

14. Click the File tab, then Open. A list of recent documents should appear.

15. When the Recent Documents screen appears, click Cooking Chicken.

Experiment #1D: Formatting Words

Procedure:

1. Highlight the words Cooking Chicken.

2. Click the drop-down arrow next to the Font list.

3. When the Font list appears, click Arial.

The text should look like this:

4. Click in white space on the page to un-highlight the text.

Using Fonts

Fonts, or letter shapes, fall into two main categories: Serif and Sans Serif.

Serif fonts have little "feet" at the bottom of letters, like TIMES NEW ROMAN.

Sans Serif fonts, like ARIAL, don't have "feet" at the bottom of letters.

For the main text of a document, you may want to use a serif font. Their "feet"
lead your eye across the page, and make long passages easier to read.

You may want to use a sans serif font for headings. This makes a nice
contrast:

The heading of this descriptive paragraph is in a sans serif font. See how it
draws attention to this paragraph below it?

5. Highlight the words Cooking Chicken again. Then click the drop-down arrow next to the
Font Size list.

6. When the Font Size list appears, click 16.

7. Click in white space on the page to deselect the text. The words Cooking Chicken
should now be larger:

8. Save the document.

9. Highlight the words Cooking Chicken, then click the Bold icon.

The text should look like this:

10. Click the Bold icon again to un-bold the text. The text should return to normal.

11. Click the Italics icon.

The text should now look like this:

12. Click the Italics icon again to un-italicize the text.

13. Click the Bold icon one more time.

14. Click in white space on the page to de-select the text. The text should look like this:

15. Highlight the words Cooking Chicken.

16. Click the drop-down arrow next to the Font Color icon.

When the Font Color grid appears, click Green.

17. Deselect the text. The text should now be green-colored.

18. Save the document.

19. Highlight the words Cooking Chicken. In the Ribbon, click the Change Case icon.

When the menu appears, click UPPERCASE.

20. Save the document. It should now look like this:

Experiment #1E: Formatting Paragraphs

Procedure:

1. Make sure the words COOKING CHICKEN are highlighted...


...then click the Align Right icon.

The document should look like this:

2. Click the Center icon. The text COOKING CHICKEN should shift to the center of the
page.

3. Click at the end of the last line to place your cursor there.

4. Press Enter twice to start a new line and create a little space below the last line of text.

5. Type the phrase: Cooking chicken this way also enables you to make gravy or a
sauce from the crispy chicken bits left in the bottom of the skillet.

6. Click the Increase Indent icon.

The document should now look like this:

7. Click the Increase Indent icon again. The text should indent further.

8. Click the Decrease Indent icon.

9. The text should go back to its previous indent.

10. Save the document.
