Welcome to English!

Hello students and Parents,


My name is Chanel Harry, and I am the teacher for English 11B. I am happy to have you in my
class and look forward to a wonderful, and productive year! This will be my first year teaching
English here and I am excited to embark on this journey with you all.
A little about me:

 I am a certified teacher in the state of Georgia.


 I’m from New York City.
 I hold a B.A. in Creative Writing and a Master’s degree in Secondary Education.
 I have written and published 7 novels. 2 of them are young adult horror (I have them
available in the classroom bookshelf for leisure reading. Please make sure to check
them out with me and return them after reading so other students can check them out
if they are interested.)
 I love reading and writing.
 I am a big fan of anime.
 I love teaching.

Content:
We all know that English can sometimes be a difficult subject but I want to let you know that in
my class, difficult doesn’t exist! We will cover a variety of English literature topics such as British
Literature, American literature, Multicultural Literature and Essay writing to name a few.
Course Schedule:

 Weeks 1-2 Teacher and Student Introductions. Discussion on classroom expectations.


Starting reading expectations. First assignments (reading short British stories)
 Weeks 2-4 Journal entries. Continued reading on British literature. Discussing the short
story. Group readings on The Crucible.
 Weeks 5-6 Acting out The Crucible in groups. Discussing The Crucible with teacher.
Discussing the critical lens essay.
 Weeks 7-12 Reading selected Multicultural Literature. Discussions within groups and
journal entries. Starting novel The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. Students will be
reading this within groups as well as homework.
 Weeks 12-14 Students will continue reading The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. Working
on assignments and handouts. Group activity and project on novel.
 Week 15 Students will be assessed on the novel by writing a 1-2 paged typed, double
spaced essay on the novel’s symbolic meaning that we have discussed.
Textbooks & Supplies:
PRENTICE HALL LITERATURE TIMELESS VOICES TIMELESS THEMES 7TH EDITION STUDENT
EDITION GRADE 11 2002C
Students will need- a 3 inch binder. (I don’t mind the color, in fact, be creative!) It must be for
our English class only. This will be used for keeping your handouts and homework assignments
in. You will also need a marble notebook for your journal writing.
I will provide students with a copy of The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas.
*If you need any assistance getting supplies for our class, please do not hesitate to contact

Classroom Policy:

 Attendance is a must! Attending class is a big part of your grade so please make sure to
attend class.
 You’re only allowed one time to be tardy! If you are tardy more than once, it will affect
your grade because you will miss out on group discussion. Please make sure you’re in
class prompt and ready to start.
 No phones out in class during the lesson. Please make sure that your phone is on silent
and away in your backpacks.
 Homework is to be turned in on time. However, I will accept a day late homework but
with each day late, 5 points will be taken off your homework. Think about this!
Rules and Consequences:

 No letting/putting down other students.


 No phones/texting/talking/ social media checking on phones. They will be confiscated
after a second warning then given back at the end of class.
 No talking while I’m giving a lesson unless we are in discussion.
 No cross talking, if you have a question, raise your hand and I will call on you,
 Always strive to help one another! Each one TEACH one!
 No question is a “stupid” question.
 Please be kind!
 Always greet each other with a positive greeting.

Parent Information/Expectations
As a teacher, I have an open door policy. Please feel free to contact me or stop by the
classroom. Parent/Teacher night is a resource/support for parents, I encourage parents to
attempt to attend all Parent/Teacher night support groups. If you cannot make it, I will be sure
to send home the materials and information that was discussed with your child. Please do not
wait for your child to give you a note, make sure to check your child’s backpack for there is
always information that I will send home with them.
Aside from parent night, I am available to meet with parents one on one to discuss any
concerns they may have about classroom activities and child’s progress.
