HW 10 Ch 17

1) In what state of matter is the “steam” rising from the liquid in the accompanying photo? (Hint:
Is it possible to see water vapor?)
The state of matter of the steam rising from the coffee is GAS.

2) Refer to Figure 17.2 to complete the following:

a. In which state of matter is water the most dense?
Solid
b. In which state of matter are water molecules most energetic?
Gas
c. In which state of matter is water highly compressible?
Gas

4) The accompanying graph shows how air temperature and relative humidity change on a
typical summer day in the Midwest. Assuming that the dew point temperature remained
constant, what would be the best time of day to water a lawn to minimize evaporation of the
water spread on the grass?
The best time of day to water a lawn to minimize evaporation of the water spread on the
grass is 6 AM.

6) Use the data in Table B, to complete the following:

a. Which city has a higher relative humidity?
Bismarck, ND has a higher relative humidity.
b. Which city has the greater quantity of water vapor in the air?
Phoenix, AZ has the greater quantity of water vapor in the air.
c. In which city is the air closest to its saturation point with respect to water vapor?
Bismarck, ND is the closest to its saturation point with respect to water vapor.

8e) On which side of the mountain might you expect lush vegetation, and on which side would
you expect desert-like conditions?
I’d expect lush vegetation on the windward side since precipitation falls there the most.
I’d also expect desert-like conditions on the leeward side since it gets far less rain.
