Analytical Settings, and Placing Loads

Exercise 10-1
1. Start Revit 2021

2. Open the file Exercise 10-1.rvt

3. Go to 01 First floor plan

4. Duplicate it with Detailing, and rename it 01 First – Analytical

5. Using Project Browser, right-click the newly created view, and select Apply
Template Properties, when the dialog box comes up select Structural Analytical
Isolated, then click OK

6. Hide everything except the analytical model. What is the color of analytical
beams? __________________

7. Duplicate {3D} view, and rename it 3D – Analytical

8. Right-click the newly created view, and select Apply Template Properties, when
the dialog box comes up select Structural Analytical Isolated-3D, then click OK

9. Select one of the floors, and Hide/Category so we can see beams, and columns

10. Switch off the Thin lines from Quick Access Toolbar

11. Zoom to one of the beams, and note the colors at the two ends

12. Start Visibility / Graphics command, and select Analytical Model Categories tab,
click the plus sign at the left of Analytical Beams, to expand it. Change the color
of End Segment, and Start Segment and click on Local Coordinate System

13. If you can’t differentiate colors go to Structural Settings dialog box, select
Analytical Model Settings tab, and look at the bottom of the dialog box, make
sure that Differentiate ends of linear analytical models is turned on

14. Start Load Combination command

15. At the top part, Add a new combination, call it Dead

16. Add another one and call Dead + Live

17. Add a third one and call it Dead + Wind

18. The first combination = 1.4 DL1

19. The second combination = 1.2 DL1 + 1.6 LL1

20. The third combination = 0.9 DL1 + 1.0 WIND1

21. Change the State of the three combination to Ultimate

22. At the lower right corner, click Add, and add two usage, Gravity, and
Combined. Set the first combination to be Gravity, and second and third to be
Combined

23. Click OK to end the command

24. Go to 3D – Analytical view if you are not in it already

25. Start Section Box command, and lower the top plane to show only the Ground
Floor. Set the Visual Style = Hidden Line

26. Start Boundary Conditions command

27. Select Line, and Fixed, and select all the lines of the foundation wall, including
the elevator wall (look at the model from bottom)

28. Go to Visibility / Graphics command, and turn off Local Coordinate System for
Analytical Beams

29. There are six columns we need to set boundary conditions for them

30. Look at the model from bottom

31. Start Boundary Conditions command, select Point, and Fixed, locate the end of
the six columns

32. This what your model will look like from bottom:

33. From Properties turn off Section Box

34. Unhide the Analytical floors (Click Reveal Hidden Elements, point to one of the
floors, click tab until you see Analytical Floors, click, then right-click, and
Unhide Category)

35. Start Loads command

36. Select Hosted Area Load

37. From Properties set Load Case = LL1(2), and Fz1 = - 4.8 KN/m2

38. Select the Slab on grade, then select all the above floors up until the roof (we
are setting the value for all floors just to simplify the process of the exercise)

39. Press [Esc] twice to end the command

40. Go to 06 Roof floor plan view, create a duplicate with detailing. Rename the
new view to be 06 Roof – Analytical. Right-click the newly created view, and
select Apply Template Properties, when the dialog box comes up select
Structural Analytical Isolated, then click OK

41. Start Load command, select Hosted Line Load

42. From Properties set Load Case = WIND1 (3), and set Fy1 = 10 KN/m, and
Fz1 = -10 KN/m, and select the horizontal south beams only

43. Go to 3D – Analytical view and look at your model

44. Save an close the file
