A renewal for Saigonese symbol- Ben Thanh Market

Ho Chi Minh City is a dynamic and magnificent metropolis. The active, along with

the beautifulness of this town not only comes from the residents’ lifestyles but also

from many architectural masterpieces. One of the best go-to places in the city is

Ben Thanh market. This ancient market is seen as a historical witness and

observed many ups and downs of the city. When referring to the Ben Thanh

Market, the customer will immediately associate the fulsome smell and vivid colors

of food courts. Besides, the brightness and wide range of commodities from

souvenir shops will also overwhelm the customers. Nevertheless, this old site is

gradually deteriorating because of over-use and disrepair. This essay will point out

two issues linked to hygiene and infrastructures, respectively. In each aspect,

solutions will be presented for dealing with these problems.

Located in the city’s downtown, this centenarian market is like the intersection of

nineties and modern times, so it can bring up memories of elderlies. Although it is

regarded as the most current and cleanest market, the hygiene factors are a

severe problem for many years and made customers lose their appetite. Because

of lacking dustbins, the rubbish is littered disorderly and leads to sewer pipe

blockage. The apparent drawback of clogged sewers is that the customers have to

undergo the stink while shopping or eating. Besides, food safety is also a vital

criterion in every food store. Hence, the market’s manager should consider

replacing old pipes and setting some rubbish bins at busy parts. Concurrently, they

can think of choosing a group that is responsible for testing the freshness of

foodstuffs. This innovation doesn’t merely ensure people’s health but also lifts the

reputation and this ancient market.

Above all, not just renowned for European and remarkable architectural features

like the duplicate of Big Ben clock tower on the south entry, the market also owns

Asian specificnesses. These traits come from the red iron roofs taken the idea of

Vietnamese tile roofs, or multiple windows are constructed to let in sunlight like

Thailand Grand Palace. Hence, these features bring a sense of belonging and

attraction to customers. However, the interior space of the Ben Thanh market is

degrading. At present, it is easy to realize the leaky roof. Many customers will be

caught by surprise because there are some colorful buckets on the top of stalls.

They will believe that it is a part of Vietnamese culture. However, this is merely the

way shopkeepers catch the rainwater. Moreover, the floor tiles that are broken can

cause injury to the customers. To solve this problem, the local authority has to

cooperate with architects with high levels of expertise because restoring a historic

site is actually difficult. They must try to find materials that are the same as the

original to make the restoration seamless and keep the soul of the architecture.

Thus, the more concentrated on infrastructural renovation, the safer and more

satisfied will be. 

In conclusion, the Ben Thanh market is a symbol of business in HCM and the pride

of Vietnamese. However, some inevitable issues related to the infrastructures and

sanitation have made this place less enticing. Consequently, innovation is integral

to renovating the infrastructures of the historical area, improving health for

residents, and retaining the hospitable spirit of this city.
