Horizontal well:

is the process of steering a drill bit to follow horizontal

path oriented approximately 90° From vertical through
the reservoir rock.
Drianhole:
Development, Re-enrty, sidetracking, lateral drilling
Extended reach well:
Horizontal section >= 2 total vertical depth
Multi-lateral well:
A well in which there is more than one horizontal or
near horizontal lateral well drilled from a single borehole
Reducing gas coning
Reducing water coning
Enhanced oil recovery
1. Open hole: simplest and cheapest in
consolidated reservoirs 25%

2. Slotted liner: with or without screen in loosely

consolidated sand 55%

3. Slotted liner with blank sections and ECP: 15%

4. Cased, cemented, and perforated liner:

expensive for medium and long radius 5%

5. Directional control
Delivering weight on the bit
Hole Cleaning
In a directional well, the particle
velocity is still a function of the
velocity of the fluid and settling
velocity but they are no longer
directly opposing
The particle will seek the low side
of the hole

The maximum tensile stress on drill pipe =
E: Young’s modulus of elasticity
Rw
Rw: radius of the drill string   E( )
R: radius of curvature of the hole R

Calculate the radius of curvature to which a cylindrical drill collar

can be bent without exceeding a tensile stress of 10000 psi,
assuming Young’s modulus of elasticity is 29*106 psi and the collar
diameter is 5 in.
5 E29 *106 1
R  Rw ( )  x ( )x  604 ft
 2 10000 12
BUR= 5730/604=9.48o/100 ft
According to the geometry of rigid cylinder in curved hole:
L 2
R  ( )  ( R  D) 2
2

2
L 2
( )  R 2  R 2  2 RD  ( D) 2
2
Which if we neglect the term, the equation becomes,

L  2 2 R D

It is planned to build an articulated motor consisting of straight

cylindrical sections jointed together with flexible joints. Assuming the
motor is 95 mm in diameter, what would be the maximum length of
motor section it is desired to drill holes with a deviation of 20o /30 m
(100 ft) and if bending of the motor section is to be avoided . The hole
diameter is to be 121 mm.

2. Retrievable Multi-Lateral System, RMLS,

3. Selective Re-entry System of Multilaterals
