CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS

SUMMARY

The purpose of the study was to determine the factors affecting the

reading interest of distance learners of Calumpang Elementary School. The

writers deemed it really significant to study and determine the factors with a

relation on the reading interest of the students as distance learner. The

independent variable of the study is the demographic profile of the students

which included age, gender and grade level, and of the respondent’s

constituent factors affecting the reading interest of the distance learners.

The dependent variable was the respondents reading interest.

This study followed a quantitative approach and used a descriptive

correlation research design. One hundred eighty two (182) distance learners

from Calumpang elementary school were chosen as participants and were

selected using Random Sampling Method.

Survey forms were used as tools in data gathering. The data gathered

were analyzed and interpreted using graphs and tables. Based on the

findings, the main factors affecting the interest of the distance learners were

as follows; family concern, peer influence, environment and personal

interest of the respondents.

The age and grade level of the distance learners did not have any

effect on their reading interest.

The gathered and analyzed data showed that there was significant

relationships between the demographic profile of students and the

constituent factors reading interest of the distance learners.

Findings

Problem 1. The first stated problem was to describe the distance

learners’ demographic profile in terms of age, gender and grade level.

It was found out that there were 69 participants who were 6-8 years

old, 91 participants who were 9-11 years old and there were 22 participants

who were aged 12 year old and above.

It was also found out that there were 93 males who participated and

89 female participants.

The grade 1-2 participants were 67, grade 3-4 participants were 48

and the grade 5-6 participants were 67.

Problem 2. The second problem was to know if the factors that were

given can affect the reading interest of the participants.

The study showed that all of the given factors affected the reading

interest of the distance learners and the majority had “agreed moderately”
that the family concern, peer influence and personal interest can affect their

reading interest. The only factor that “certainly agreed” on were the

environment.

Problem 3. The third problem was to find out if there is a relationship

between the demographic profile and the factors affecting reading interest.

The result of the study showed that the correlation varied from

perfectly positive to perfectly negative. Age and Grade level had the same

perfectly negative correlation on the family concern, there was a small

negative correlation on the family concern, there was a perfectly positive

correlation on the environment and there was a small positive correlation on

the personal interest of the learners. There was a perfectly negative

correlation between gender and the factors affecting the learners reading

interest.

Conclusions

1. The distance learners were more interested in reading if their

environment was good or conducive to reading, Family concern, peer and

company can influenced their reading interest moderately and their own

personal preferences can also slightly increase their interest in reading in

totality, this research concludes that the major factor affecting the distance

learners’ interest in reading was the environment and was followed by

personal interest, family concern and peer influence.
