VI. DEFINE THE FOLLOWING


1. Nutrients :
Ans: Substances that provide nourishment protecting us from diseases
and helping us grow are called nutrients. The five main nutrients present
in our food are Carbohydrates, Fats, Vitamins, Minerals and Proteins.
2. Fermentation:
Ans: Fermentation is the process of chemical breakdown of a substance
by microorganisms. It increases the taste and nutritional value of the
food.
3. Preservation:
Ans: Preservation is an effort of keeping something protected and
prevent from spoiling. Ex. Pickling, boiling, sweetening.

VII. GIVE REASON
1. People who do a lot of physical work need more carbohydrate.
Ans: People who do a lot of physical work need a lot of energy from their
diet. Carbohydrates are known to be energy giving food. Such people
need more carbohydrate food intake.
2. We do not feel tired even without eating anything for a long.
Ans: The fat we get from our food forms a layer beneath our skin and
keeps the body warm providing more energy for a long time, so we don’t
feel tired even without eating for long time.

1. What is Balanced diet?
Ans: A diet containing all nutrients in correct amounts along with water
and roughage is called Balanced diet.

2. Why do we need to cook food?


Ans: Cooking kills the germs present in food and protect us from
diseases. It adds flavour to the food and makes it eatable.

3. What is canning?
Ans: Canning is the method of preserving food by sealing them in cans
after removing moisture from them.

4. Why sprouting enhances nutritional value?


Ans: Sprouted grains such as grams and pulses are rich in vitamins and
proteins, thus enhances nutritional value.

5. Mention any 4 good food habits


Ans: I. Always wash hands before and after eating and preparing food.
II. Always eat fresh and properly cooked food.
III. Food must be chewed properly.
IV. Fruits and vegetables must be washed properly before cooking
or eating them raw.
