TIER 1 WRESTLING (est. 2021)
IDAHO PRODUCES SIX WUSA ALL-AMERICANS

The publication Wrestling USA Magazine (WUSA) has been promoting amateur wrestling at all
levels since the mid-1960s and to date is among the longest family operated (Bryant Family)
magazines still in existence. Since 1968, WUSA has recognized the top high school seniors in
the country by publishing teams consisting of All-American (AA) and Honorable Mention All-
American (HM) selections. Beginning in 1976, WUSA added another group to the All-American
selections called the DREAM TEAM and in 1987 the ACADEMIC TEAM. The process to be
considered for these teams is for a coach to submit a WUSA Magazine nomination form
(Seniors only) after the state meet of a wrestler’s senior season (entry deadline is usually
around April 1st). Traditionally, the All-American teams are featured in the May issue, but due
to the COVID pandemic, the process was extended to July/August. A “Huge” thank you my
wrestling colleague and friend Dan Fickel, the National Editor, for his hard work and
commitment to put these teams together for all these years. His efforts are greatly appreciated
and second to none.

The first Idaho wrestler to be featured on an All-American team was in 1971 with Mark Bittick
of Notus High School in Caldwell being selected for the Honorable Mention All-American Team.
To date, Idaho has had 118 wrestlers selected for the various teams with several going on to
do well at the collegiate and international levels. They include Dream Team selections Jared
Lawrence (Sandpoint HS, 1998), Adam Hall (Bonners Ferry HS, 2006), Clayton Foster (Kamiah
HS, 2007), and Tanner Hall (Meridian HS, 2011). On average, the state of Idaho has about two
to three wrestlers selected each year. The highest number of All-Americans selected thus far
is six (The Club of Six), which took place in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2018, and again in 2021. This
year’s selected group consists of Drew Roberts (Coeur d’ Alene, AA), Michael Mitchell (Kuna,
HM), Lane Reardon (Post Falls, HM), Dante Roggio (Kuna, HM), Preston Owens (Kuna, HM), and
Charley Hastritter (Capital, HM). Idaho Falls leads the state with 11 Americans selected
followed by Meridian (8), and Post Falls (8). Following is a breakdown of the five years that the
state of Idaho produced six All-American selections each, as well as the top three schools.

Leading the 2021 Idaho senior class is 2x state champion Drew Roberts of Coeur d’ Alene High
School (5A Division). Selected for the All-American Team, Roberts also won a state title in
Oregon prior to attending Coeur d’ Alene. Competing at 152s his senior year, Roberts finished
his prep career with a 125-5 record and will be attending the University of Minnesota. The
remaining five Idaho wrestlers were selected for the Honorable Mention All-American Team.
Among this talented group is Michael Mitchell of Kuna High School (5A Division). Capping off
his senior season with an overall record of 177-22 (82 Falls), Mitchell won his fourth state title
in a highly contested finals match at 132s in sudden victory. Joining Mitchell is teammates
Dante Roggio (170s) and Preston Owens (152s), each state champions and 4x state medalists.
Roggio finished his prep career with an overall record of 175-11 (103 falls), while Owens
produced a record of 154-21 (74 Falls) and two All-American honors at the 16U Nationals in
Fargo. Both Roggio and Owens will be attending the University of Mary in North Dakota
(Division II Program). Next is Post Falls Lane Reardon, a 2x state champion with four state
medals (6, 2, 1, 1). Finishing his prep career in the 145 pound weight group, he compiled an
overall record of 129-42 with 105 falls. Reardon will be attending Ellsworth College in Iowa.
Rounding off the Idaho Six is Capital’s Charley Hastritter, a 2x state champion and 3x state
medalist (3, 1, 1). Competing in the 285 pound weight group, Hastritter compiled a record of
120-37 (74 falls) and will be attending Oregon State.

In summary, the state of Idaho represented well in this year’s All-American selections. Since
the first Idahoan, Mark Bittick (Notus HS), was selected in 1971, the Gem State has had 118
wrestlers selected for this great honor. Idaho Falls High School leads the state with a total of
11 All-Americans selected since the first group in 1968. The Class of 2021 became the fifth
senior class to produce a total of six All-Americans. Considering the great talent with our
sophomore class (Class of 2024) and incoming freshman, I am confident that the record of six
All-American selections will be broken in the years to come. I extend my congratulations to the
Idaho Six; Drew Roberts, Michael Mitchell, Dante Roggio, Lane Reardon, Preston Owens, and
Charley Hastritter for a job well done and good luck in your future years to come.
