FINITE ELEMENT METHODS
(Machine Design)
Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 60
Note: Answer any FIVE questions. All Questions carry equal Marks.
5 × 12 = 60M
1. a) Write the general steps of the finite element method. (6M)
b) Explain the node numbering scheme for a finite element mesh. (6M)

2. a) For the cantilever beam shown in figure below, find deflection using the
Rayleigh-Ritz method. (6M)

b) Label the elements and nodes for the systems shown in figures below to
produce a minimum bandwidth. Note that the elements are plane
frame elements. Indicate the Local degrees of freedom, Global degrees of
freedom. (6M)

3. Determine the nodal displacements and element stresses for the bar as
shown in figure. Assume E = 200 x 109 N/m2 (12M)

4. a) Explain the different approaches used in developing the element stiffness

matrices and load vectors in FEM. (6M)
b) Derive stiffness matrix for a 1-D bar element under axial loading. (6M)

triangular element shown in the figure. (12M)

6. a) Describe the methods of applying boundary conditions in FEM. (6M)

b) Derive the shape functions for a 1-D beam element. (6M)

7. a) Derive strain displacement matrix for triangular element. (6M)

b) Explain the Gaussian quadrature approach with suitable example. (6M)
8. A bar rod of length 1 m and diameter 7 cm is fixed at one end. E=200 Gpa
and density = 7 gm/cc. Modelling the rod as two bar elements, determine the
natural frequencies. (12M)
