PART - A (8 X 5 = 40)
Answer any EIGHT Questions

1. Fit a straight line of the form Y = aX + b to the following data.

X: 0 1 2 3 4
Y: 1 1.8 3.3 4.5 6.3

2. A computer while calculating correlation coefficient between two

variables X and Y from 25 pairs of observation obtained the
following results:
n  25,  X  125,  X 2  650,  Y  100,  Y 2  460,  XY  508

It was however, later discovered at the time of checking that he

had copied down two pairs as

X Y
6 14
8 6
While the correct values
X Y
8 12
6 8
Obtain the correct value of correlation coefficient.

3. Show that, for any three events, A,B and C

P ( A  B / C )  P( A / C )  P( B / C )  P( A  B / C )
4. The mean muscular endurance score of a random sample of 60
subjects was found to be 145 with a standard deviation of 40.
construct a 95% confidence interval for the true mean. Assume
the sample size to be large enough for normal approximation.
What size of sample is required to estimate the mean within 5 of
the true mean with a 95% confidence?

5. The theory predicts the proportion of beans in the four groups,

A,B,C and D should be 9:3:3:1. In an experiment among 1600
beans, the numbers in the four groups were 882, 313, 287 and
118. Does the experimental result support the theory?

6. Test the hypothesis that  = 10, given that s = 15 for a random

sample of size 50 from a normal population.

7. If r12 and r13 are given, show that r23 must lie in the range:
r12 r13  (1  r122  r132  r122 r132 )1 / 2

8. From the data relating to the yield of dry bark (X1) height (X2) and
girth (X3) for 18 cinchona plants the following correlation
coefficients were obtained.
r12 = 0.77 r13 = 0.72 and r23 = 0.52.
Find the multiple correlation coefficient R1.23 and partial
correlation coefficient r12.3.

9. In a partially destroyed laboratory, record of an analysis

correlation data, the following results only legible:
Regression equations: 8X-10Y+66=0
40X-18Y=214 variance of X=9. Find
the correlation coefficient between X and Y.

10. Fit a parabola of second degree to the following data.

X: 0 1 2 3 4
Y: 1 1.8 1.3 2.5 6.3

11. In a bolt factory machines A,B and C manufacture respectively

25%, 35% and 40% of the total. Out of their output 5,4,2 per cent
are defective bolts. A bolt is drawn at random from the product
and is found to be defective. What are the probabilities that it was
manufactured by machines A,B and C?

12. The moment generating function of a random variable X is

9 5 x 9 x
2 1 t  1  2
 3  3 e  . Show that P( - 2 < X <  + 2) =  9C x  3   3 
x 1

PART - B (4 x 10 = 40)
Answer any FOUR Questions

13. In a year there are 956 births in a town A, of which 52.5% were
males, while in towns A and B combined this proportion in a
total of 1,406 births was 0.496. Is there any significant difference
in the proportion of male births in the two towns?

14. The retail prices of a particular commodity in three principal

cities, Bombay, Calcutta and Delhi are Observed (in rupees) at
four randomly chosen shops in each of the city, as follows:

Bombay Calcutta Delhi

16 14 4
8 10 10
12 10 8
14 6 8
