This module covers the various dance forms, from tribal,classical ballet,folkdances,
popular dance and other styles. It deals with the distinct features of a particular dance form,
stressing its history, purposes and significance to one’s daily living. Performance task on
foreign and popular dance presentations is the main focus of this module.

1. Apply anatomical and biomechanical approaches for effective


performance.
2. Expresses effectively their assessment of their own performance on
various physical activities.
3. Establish discipline,self-confidence,respect and determination in pursuing
a healthy habit lifestyle.

At the end of the module, you must have:

1. Differentiated various dance forms.


2. Executed selected dance forms.
3. Created and delivered a dance presentation.

Learning Task # 2 Dance Sequence Presentation Interview

What are your 2 strategies in coming up with your individual dance sequence?

There are many different styles of dance, each one with its own set of skills, music and
style. The following are some dance forms;

1. ) Classical Dance: A classical dance form


characterized by grace and precision of movement
and by elaborate formal gestures, steps, and
poses. Dances with standardized rules and
restrictions. It can be religious-related dance or for
court and royal entertainment.

2. ) Classical Ballet: Dance of supreme standards


learned from an academe. Ballet used to be a court
dance that developed into a highly stylized theatre
art that it is today. It had its beginning in Italy,
developed and nurtured in France and perfected in
Russia.

3. ) Modern Dance: A deviation from the


principles of classical ballet developed by Isadora
Duncan. It developed in Germany and USA. It is
characterized by natural and true expression of the
human body and soul. This dance attempts to
express an idea without setting rules as to how the
idea is to be conveyed.

4.) Contemporary Dance: Contemporary dance


is a style of expressive dance that combines
elements of several dance genres including modern,
jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary
dancers strive to connect the mind and the body
through fluid dance movements”. IT developed
during the middle portion of the twentieth century
and has since grown to become one of the
dominating performance genres for formally
trained dancers throughout the world, with
particularly strong popularity in the U.S. and
Europe.”

5.) Ethnic and Tribal dance : A dance particularly


found in a group of people living together in a
locality with common beliefs and customs.

6.) Recreational Dance: Includes dance mixers,


square dancing and round and couple dances.

7.) Social and Ballroom dance- includes all dance


forms which bring individual together in dances
designed for group participation and enjoyment. A
dance set in a social gathering with more formal
atmosphere than the simple and informal parties in
which the recreational dances are the usual forms.
This is usually held in the evenings and participants
are usually in the formal attire for purpose of
recreation and entertainment. It is usually
accompanied by popular music.

8.) Popular Dance: Highly recognized as a dance


form in television and other dance center like disco
houses and social gathering.

9.) Dance sports: An international ballroom competition consisting of two


categories namely the Modern Standard( Tango, Foxtrot, Waltz, Viennese Waltz and
Quickstep) and Latin American dances( Chachacha, Rumba, Paso Doble, Jive and Samba).

9.1 Modern Standard Dances

9.1.1) The Waltz came from the old German word


“ walzen” to roll, turn or to glide. A dance born in the
suburbs of Vienna and in the alpine region of Austria,
is perform in ¾ time with strong accent on the first
beat and a basic pattern of step—step—close..…

9.1.2) The Viennese Waltz is performed at about 180


beats (58-60 measures) a minute. It is a rotary dance
where the dancers are constantly turning either toward
their right (natural) or toward their left (reverse),
interspersed with non-rotating change steps to switch
between the directions of rotation. This competitive
style of dance has a reduced amount of steps: Change
Steps, Passing Changes, Hesitations, Hovers, the
Contra Check, Natural and reverse turns.

9.1.3) The Foxtrot , born in the twenties was named so


after an American performer Harry Fox. Initially it
was danced at 48 bars per minute tempo. At the end of
the World War II, this dance consisted of walks, three
steps, a slow walk and a sort of a spin turn... Basic
pattern is slow, slow quick, quick.

9.1.4) The Tango(the dance with a stop” Baille Con


Carte”) is one of the most fascinating of all dances.
Originating in Spain or Morocco, this dance was
introduced to the NewWorld by the Spanish setllers,
eventually coming back to Spain with Black and
Creole influences. Basic pattern is
slow.slow.quick.quick slow.

9.1.5) The Quickstep,as the fast version of Foxtrot which


is danced at 48 bars per minute tempo. The Charleston
had a lot of influence on the development of this dance

9.2 Latin American Dances

9.2.1 ) The Samba, originated in Brazil, was and is


danced as a festival dance during the street festivals and
celebrations. The festive style and mood of the dance has
kept it alive and popular to this day.

9.2.2) The Cha cha cha is an off shoot of the mambo,


this dance became popular in 1945 where people began
dancing to, calling the step the triple Mambo. The dance
consist of three quick steps( triple step or ) and two
slower steps on the one beat and two beat..

9.2.3) The Rumba performed extremely fast with


exaggerated hip movements and with a sensually
aggresive attitude on the part of the man and a
defensive attitude on the part of the woman. The music
is played with a staccato beat in keeping with the
vigorous expressive movements of the dancers.

9.2.4) The Paso Doble is a dance style is based on the


Bullfight. It portrays the Torero and his cape, and is
danced to the characteristic march music used for
procession at the beginning of a corrida.

(9.2.5) The Jive was performed competitively amongst


the Negroes in the South East of USA. The prize was
frequenctly a cake so the dance became known as the
CAKE WALK. It often consisted of two parts performed
alternately: a solemn procession of couples, and an
energetic display dance, all done in finest clothes. The
associated music became known as RAGTIME

10.) Folkdances are traditional dances of a specific folk handed from generation to generation
to generation in the manner of all traditions. These dances are usually native to one group of
people who developed them based on their daily activities. These are social expressions of the
mores, thoughts, lifestyles, practices and feelings of a people through bodily movements.
These are the outbursts of people’s feelings. A folk dance is the heartbeat of the people.

Characteristics of Philippines Folkdances


- As a rule, Philippine folkdance begins and ends with a saludo.
- In general, dancers stand apart. A distance of about 6-8 inches from each
other is normal.
- There is very little, if any, body contact, although holding hands is common.
- Most dances are done are in pairs and hand movements play a very important role.
- Many of the dances are done in long formation.
- Our dances are performed by both young and old and by both sexes.
- War dances are found among non Christian tribes.

Classifications of the Philippine Folkdances according to its Nature


- Occupational Dance depicting action of certain occupation, industry, or human labor.
- Religious or Ceremonial dances performed in connection with religious vows and
ceremonies.
- Comic dances depicting funny movements for entertainment.
- Game dances down with play elements (dance mixers).
- Courtship dances depicting romance.

11.) Creative Dance: It is a form of dance in which you create the dance steps or
movements according to your experiences thoughts and feelings. You create your own
dance movements according to how you interpret your ideas, feelings and sensory
impressions and express them symbolically using your body. ( Battad et al, 2016).
According to Gilbert(2015),creative dance is best taught through concept.Dances should
have the knowledge and time to create their own steps and choreography, developing
personal voices that will surely enrich the world of dance.

Instructions: Group dance presentation

1.) The class will be divided into smaller groups where each one will draw lots on what
particular genre one’s group will focused on.Each group should consist of modular and
on line students.Draw lots will be facilitaed during the synchronoums class session .

2.) The perfrfomance task will consist of two parts such as the theoritical as well as the
performance presentations.

2.1) On the theoritical aspect, the group will prepare powerpoint presentation on
the history,purpose of the dance with costumes and props for about 7-10 slides only .

2.2 .) On the performance task output, the group will perform the said dance for a
maximum of 2 minutes only.

2.3) The video presentation must be prepared in such a way each member must be
clearly identified and projected on screen. The duration of the dance performance of maximum
of 2 minutes must be strictly observed.

2.4 ) Each leader group will submit their respective pointpower presentations and
video in canvas or mxguanzon@gmail.com to be submitted on April 12,2021.

2.5) With due respect to the culture, improvised costumes and props are
encouraged to ensure that students will not be spending financial expenses.

3.)Due to health protocol, students are required to practice the routines on own their own at
home. No face to face practice sessions should be scheduled. Practice protocol on keeping
oneself hydrated,wearing appropriate attires, warm up/cool down exercises, and space safety
should be strictly observed.
