ERROR & SENTENCE TRANSFORMATION
PART A: ERROR
The following passages contain 10 mistakes. Identify the mistakes and correct them.
(0) has been done as an example.
I. Passage 1:
DANCERS OR ATHLETES?
Are dancers really just athletes? They are similarities between them and it has long been
acknowledged that its level of fitness is remarkably similar. In fact, experiments which footballers
played part in training sessions with dancers showed that it was the players who got tired first!
Many people already view dancers like elite athletes. Unfortunately, what is also apparent is that
while dancers possess an enviable range of flexibility, not to mention amazing muscular strong,
they are also high susceptible to injury? And apart from those who are lucky enough to dance at
the highest level, they may have little real support when something occur, so careers can be cut
short. To return to an original question, much would argue that dancers are more than athletes.
While training equal hard, they have the added pressure of looking beautiful and making
everything appear effortless. So it is not only the physical capabilities of the dancers that people
admire but also the grace and artistry with which they perform.

II. Passage 2:
Many American enjoy saving time. One way they’re finding doing this is by shopping from
home – by phone or by mail. Home-shopping is big business these days, and it’s getting bigger.
In most cities, you can watch TV channels that advertise 24 hours day. The products they
advertise can be ordered by calling a toll-free “800” telephone number and use a credit card. The
products are then sent direct to the customer home. What could be easier? Using mail-order
catalogs makes to buy gifts from home easy. From apples to appliances, books to bathing suits,
compact discs to camping equipment, there’s most nothing can’t be ordered by mail. Last year,
more than five billions catalogs were mailed to Americans, and over forty billion dollars’ worth of
products were bought from them. It’s expected that by the year 2000 more than one-three of all
merchandise sold in the U.S. will be sold by mail.

IV. Passage 4:
A pilot can’t fly a plane by sight alone. In many conditions, such as flying at night and
landing in dense fog, a pilot must use radar, an alternative way of navigate. Since human eyes
are not good in determining speeds of approaching objects, radar can show a pilot how fastly
nearby planes are moving. The basic principle of radar is exemplified by what happen when one
shouts in a cave. The echo of the sounds against the walls helps a person determine the size of
the cave. With radar, however, the waves are radio waves instead of sound waves. Radio waves
travel at a speed of light, about 300,000 kilometers at one second. A radar set sends out a short
burst of radiation waves. Then it receives the echoes produced when the waves bounce off
objects. By determining the time it takes for the echoes to return to the radar set, a training
technician can determine the distance among the radar set and another objects. The word “radar”,
in fact, gets its name from the term “radio detection and ranging”. “Ranging” is the term for
detection of the distance between an object and the radar set. Beside being of critical importance
to pilots, radar is essential for air traffic control, tracking ships at sea, and for tracking weather
systems and storms.
