 Background
A blood coagulation analyzer is a device used in a medical lab to measure the number of

platelets in the blood by using a fast and simple process. An important test that the device is used

for is to diagnose blood clots that could lead to a heart attack. A blood coagulation analyzer is

also used to thrombin and thromboplastin levels within a few minutes. The CS-2500 system uses

assay-based preanalytical sample-quality checks using PSI technology, automated mixing

studies, automated platelet aggregation and clot waveform analysis for reliable first-run results.

The CS-2500 is designed for high-capacity performance which allows the technologist/operator

to walk away from the device while it is running tests on samples, which allow for a more cost-

efficient footprint.

How it Works
The blood coagulation analyzer uses the photometric theory of tracking changes in the

optical density of the specimen to detect the beginning of a clot formation. A magnet in the test

tube is aligned with a magnetic detector in the cuvette, which uses the electromagnetic force and

stays locked in place with the detector as the test tube rotates. The operator will place the sample

on a tube then insert the tube into a rack and load it into the analyzer, then the operator can select

what kind of test needs to be ran on the sample. The CS-2500 can take up to 50 samples at once,

the device has 5 racks and in each rack, it can take up to 10 samples at

once. The CS-2500 has a flexible control of the vial form that allows

the use of several vials concurrently for a variety of tests. Standardized

tracking of patients from laboratory to laboratory is made possible by

similar cut-off values and findings that correspond with the entire

Siemens family of hemostasis systems. Some testing features that are found in the CS-2500 are

up to 3000 tests of reagent capacity, 5 with onboard capacity of up to 40 reagents and five

additional buffer positions, it can also test 180 simultaneous PT/APTT tests per hour.

Interesting Facts
The CS-2500 Hemostasis Blood Coagulation Analyzer is manufactured by Siemens

Healthineers, which has a price tag of $155,000 USD. However, it can be found used for around

$25,000 in a great condition. It can help the operator get a better diagnosis by offering multiple

patient sample dilutions for a single haemostasis factor analysis. The CS-2500 performs,

automatically and standardized, a broad range of simple and more advanced testing, without the

need for other equipment or the extra expertise and training it would take, this helps you to

streamline your workflow. A computerized, rule-based reflex testing improves the accuracy of

diagnostic outcomes since additional tests needed for abnormal samples are automatically

activated and performed. Thus, with no extra interference, you get all the results you need.

Safety
There aren’t many safety concerns when it comes to the CS-2500, because the machine is

very user friendly and almost fully autonomous. The only safety concerns that you can find is the

handling of samples when inserting them into the rack, this can be filed under user error. The

user has to make sure that the tubes are secured safely and properly according to manufacture

recommendations, this can prevent any problems when running the samples.

Preventative Maintenance

According to the manufacturer there is very little maintenance needed for the system. Just

periodically change the filter cartridges as indicated on the filter label. The manufacturer

recommends that the machine needs to be kept away from excessive heat or cold temperatures

indoors, also you have to let the system rest for few hours on daily basis.

The biomedical technologist's maintenance ensures that the system is operating at

reasonable speeds, that there are no leakage currents and is safe to use by the operator.

Furthermore, for this machine the only thing a biomed can do is ensure that the machine is safe

to use, because most of the problems that can arise from this machine can be dealt with by a lab

tech.
