Measuring Distance
Using Standard Units
Module 1 Day 3
THIRD QUARTER
OPENING PRAYER:
DRILL: Review
● Are all of the measurements for the living room using a
human’s foot as a unit of measurement, equal?
Explain your answer.

● Is everybody’s measurement by hand span the same?

Explain your answer.

● What is needed so that the measurement does not

change from person to another person?
● To describe motion further, you need to know how to
measure distance.
DISTANCE - is the length of path between two points.
INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM OF UNITS - Scientist all over
the world use this so they can communicate information
clearly.
Examples:
● Meter - is the unit for measuring distance.
● Kilometer - commonly used for very large distance
● Centimeter - used for measuring smaller distance
Millimeter
LENGTH - is the measure of distance between two
points.
What do you use to measure length of distance?
● Meter stick, measuring tape, tape measure,
ruler, yard stick, odometer, satellite
● Always remember to use them properly.
● Some conversions:
1 kilometer = 1000 meters
1 meter = 100 centimeters
1 centimeter = 10 millimeters
ENRICHMENT: Think and Write
Complete the table below:
DISTANCE INSTRUMENT UNIT
length of a pen
school to your house
Earth to Mars
length of a classroom
length of the pants
GENERALIZATION: Brainy Challenge

Why is it important to use the

International System Units
in measuring the length of a distance?
POINTERS FOR REVIEW IN SCIENCE:
● Describing Motion
● Measuring Distance Using Standard Units
➔ Important terms to remember
Ex: Motion
➔ Identifying Point/Frame of Reference
Ex: The boy walks to school past the
garden of roses.
➔ Determining the SI units & measuring tools of
the given distance
