PLANT
PROFILE:
VETIVER
The Federation of Holistic
Therapists (fht.org.uk) explores the
health benefits of vetiver
Related to lemongrass and citronella, vetiver is a tall grass
that produces deep, scented roots that have been used in the
East since antiquity for their fragrance. Traditionally, the plant
has been used in awnings, sunshades, blinds and matting for
its pleasant aroma, but also to deter insects. In aromatherapy,
vetiver is known as the ‘oil of tranquillity’, as it is particularly helpful
in soothing the body and mind. For this reason, it’s often used
to support those affected by stress, anxiety, and insomnia.
Vetiver’s calming, restorative and antiseptic qualities also
make it a useful skin ally, particularly for mature, loose,
wrinkly or acne-prone skin. Others say the benefits also
include boosting the immune system, balancing
the hormones and soothing muscular aches.
Important safety note: never ingest plant

I know the asana practice was just the beginning. Yoga has not only brought
me closer to my body and helped me understand it, but it’s opened my mind
and my soul to who I am. Its allowed me the space to go deeper into who I am and
what my purpose is in this world, and it’s also given me the opportunity to connect
to my emotions with vulnerability and courage. Through the power of movement,
meditation and breath, I hope to bring people in closer alignment to their true
self, without shame or judgement. I want to make women feel more confident in
themselves and to know that the yoga mat can be a place of deep self-study, but
also a space of fun and freedom. There is a common misconception that yoga
is all about the poses, and that’s something I work very hard to change
through the Soul Sanctuary membership. We, of course, talk about
alignment and anatomy, but we also talk about how we’re feeling,
our struggles, our successes and how we can keep moving
towards our most authentic self.”

“I’ve always wanted to teach yoga as a way
to help inspire courage and connection“
Gigi Yogini is a body-positive and pre and postpartum
yoga teacher @gigiyogini, (gigiyogini.com).
“My mom is the person who introduced me to yoga.
She took me to my first public class when I was in middle
school. It was hard at first, but the relaxation at the end was
the best feeling in the world. I was an athlete in high school,
but when I went to college and was no longer on a team,
I loved going to yoga and practicing with friends. It was a
wonderful combination of fitness and mindfulness which
was exactly what I needed at that time in my life. The practice
of yoga has really helped me love and appreciate my body.
It’s been a welcoming practice for all phases of life, the good
and the challenging. It has also given me the opportunity
to travel and build a business sharing something I love.
I’ve always wanted to teach yoga as a way to help inspire
courage and connection both on and off the yoga mat.
Women should know that there are types of yoga that can
accomodate any body type, any age, during any phase of
life. While Westerners have popularised the acrobatic
and contortionist elements of yoga, there are simple and
accessible practices that are extremely beneficial too. People
often say to me, ’I can’t do yoga, I’m not flexible.’ To which
I kindly reply, ‘Well, if you try, you’ll probably improve your

reasonably conscious of waste. Or so I thought.
Plastic Free July has finally hit the
mainstream agenda. From the public outcry
at the shocking final episode of David
108 Attenborough’s Blue Planet II to a number of
initiatives such as Plastics Pact – a collaboration
of businesses which has set a target to eliminate
unnecessary single-use plastic, for all plastic
packaging to be re-usable, recyclable or
compostable, and for 70 percent to be recycled
or composted by 2025. But with everyday life so
dependent on a vast variety of plastic products,
making the shift to a life without plastic can
feel like a real challenge. However, the good
news is, there are many simple ways to cut
down on plastic use – and if you think that one
person using less plastic won’t save the planet,
remember this is how all positive change begins.
