The title of the webinar I attended online was "MANAGER MASTERCLASS: Manager or
leader? How do you know?" by Marie Gervais, PhD from Shift Management. This webinar
focuses on management and leadership and how we should communicate to people in the
organization. The speaker discussed the difference between a manager and a leader. I have
learned a lot from the webinar on how to manage and lead people. According to the speaker,
management produces order and stability while leadership produces change and movement. Both
management and leadership are required in an organization because too much change and
movement can cause chaos without order and stability. As shown on the above image,
leadership and management are compared but both sets are needed in order to be successful. As
stated by Dr. Gervais, “Management skills are learned from success, encouragement and
cooperation.” On the other hand, “Leadership skills are forged in pain, difficulty, oppression and
failure.” There was also a scenario given by the speaker in which management and leadership
must be applied. During times of chaos, specially the speaker felt anxious because of the sudden
change in the plan but they were able to fixed it through planning and coordination.

I can relate my work experience from the webinar I attended because the speaker also talked
about management in times of Covid-19. Before pandemic, me and my team are having monthly
meetings for issues and concerns relating to work. But since pandemic, we are not able to had
one on one meetings due to skeletal workforce. I just created a group chat wherein we can talk
about our issues and concerns, but of course there are issues that we need to address one on one,
in that cases we conduct a meeting but we also consider social distancing and safety protocols.
At first, anxiety and stress are there, we are worried not about getting the virus but we are more
concerned about our families. There was also this time when one or two of my staff planned to
resign because of the situation, but as a supervisor I needed to encourage them to stay in the
organization though I was also afraid of the virus. But the company reinforce the safety
guidelines and protocols for Covid-19, I was able to let them stay. Yes, it was a challenge to us,
but we also need to inspire and help others specially during these times. As the speaker said,
“Increased empathy is a must, because people nowadays experience a lot of stress and anxiety.”
We need to be able to put ourselves in the shoes of our employees and customers to consistently
connect and communicate with them.
