PROCEDURES ON DETERMINING AVOIDANCE COURSE AND SPEED

Situation: Suppose you already plotted the RML, CPA and Vector Triangle. The Master of the
ship ordered that you must make the CPA not less than 2 nm. Now in order to do that you have
three options; change course, reduce speed or do them both.
Procedures:
By looking at the radar the master said that if the other vessel is in 5 nm distance from you, you
will change course with a CPA of 2nm.

 When the vessel reaches 5nm mark it in the RML labeling it MX and make a new line
rotating to the right with 2nm CPA because you are going to change course to starboard.
Name the line NRML.

 Drag NRML and place it connecting from m. Name it ARML (Advance Relative Motion
Line)

ARML
 Rotate the line connecting e to m to the right since we are altering to starboard. With
the use of compass divider turn the line to right.

 The new line will be your new course or avoidance course. Now put that line in the
center and determine its course. And that is how to determine avoidance course
without changing your speed.

 Now to determine the avoidance speed without changing course you just measure the
distance from e to the intersecting line of ARML
 You can also use both when your course is between the new course and the line e to r.
