COMPARATIVE EDUCATION

Name: Jellian C. Sagmon Program: Developmental Education

Direction: Do the given tasks and answer through your own understanding.

1.  In a paragraph form, introduce yourself (complete name, age, status, under grad
course and degree program enrolled), present job, name of the institution,
current position and number of years in the job.]

My name is Jellian C. Sagmon, 34

years old residing in the beautiful coral
island located on the East Coast of Cebu,
Lapu Lapu City. I am married for 11 years to
my husband, Sgt Steve A Sagmon with 2
adorable kids. I have completed my
Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education
Major in English from Cebu Normal
University last 2007 and my Masters Degree
for English Language Teaching at the Cebu Technological University-
Main Campus last 2018.
I am currently connected with Nissi Academy International, a
private learning institution here in Lapu Lapu City. I have just been
promoted last year as the Junior High School Principal after 5 years of
teaching in the Junior and Senior High School handling English, Research
and other subjects. I am currently on my 6 th year with this institution and
looking forward to more brilliant and valuable years leading children to
learn and be the best that they can be especially in the new normal.

2. Why this subject is important in your course?

Benchmarking is the best way to improve our educational system.
Most of the time, if not always, we settle for what works, and not
possibilities. I do believe in learning from each other and that education
should not be totally exclusive but inclusive. Looking into the best
practices from the educational system from other countries and learning
from their struggles would help us innovate, not just copy. We have to be
open minded – but not naïve. What worked for them might and might not
work for us here in the Philippines. Cultural and economical factors could
kick in. In this note, I believe this is where this subject would come
essential, through this subject we can learn, unlearn and innovate based
on the facts we could research about other educational system. Resolve
issues, Com up with better results, make learning more fun and less
oppressive to students and of course, make applicable and appropriate
curriculums patterned by those who made it successfully.
3. Why is it important to compare education systems?
The quest to being able to perfect the educational system is
somehow the goal of every educator, if not every citizen. Education is
learning, education is discovering, education is sharing one common goal.
To reach this goal, a lot of countries formulate based on experience,
culture, economy, demand and a lot of factors. When we compare, we get
to know what works and what did not work (and how they made it work)
based from other countries. As we get to know those things, we learn, we
also innovate. Education is essential and a basic need. It is simple, but
dynamic. We, as educators should be the same. The failure to adapt and
improve, is a tragedy.

4.  In which COUNTRY of interest you like to know their educational system?
I am interested in
learning the
educational system of
Finland. As what I have
read, according to
edsys.com, they have
the best education I the
world. They offer
quality education for
free with no dead ends and has been on top in every international
surveys.

5. What makes you interested?

I want to somehow understand how they are able to fit and educate
students whoa rent even required to go to school until the age of 6 and
having the shortest number of school days. They even have the students
choose their own educational path and are supportive of both academic
and vocational learning. I know that the Philippines is already gearing
towards this as we offer free education up until tertiary, however there are
major setbacks on this. Learning how Finland is able to do this, of course
considering their economy, culture, etc would also play a very big factor.
