1 a. Free vibration records of one tonne machine mounted on an isolator is shown in Fig.Q.1(a).
Determine:
i) Logarithmic decrement
ii) Damping factor
iii) Damped natural frequency

stiffness 1.2 N-m/rad. A periodic torque having maximum value of 0.6 N-m at 4 rad/s is
impressed upon the flywheel. A viscous dashpot applies damping couple of 0.8N-m at an
angular velocity of 2 rad/s. Find:
i) Maximum angular displacement
ii) Maximum couple applied to the das pot
iii) Critical damping coefficients
iv) Angle at which the angular displacement lags the torque. (10 Marks)

3 a. Explain how vibration control can be achieved in different ways. (08 Marks)
b. A milling machine of mass 460kg operates at 1800 rpm and has an unbalance which causes
a harmonic repeated force of magnitude 20,000N. Design an isolation system to limit the
transmitted force to 4000N, the amplitude of vibration during operation to 1mm and the
amplitude of vibration during start up to 10mm. Find the required stiffness of the isolator
and the minimum mass that should be added to the machine. Assume  = 0.05. (12 Marks)

b. An accelerometer has a suspended mass of 0.01kg with a damped natural frequency of
vibration of 150Hz, when mounted on an engine undergoing an acceleration of 1g at an
operating speed of 6000 rpm, the acceleration is recorded as 9.5m/sec2 by the instrument.
Find the damping constant and the spring stiffness of the accelerometer. (10 Marks)

4 a. i) Explain the terms vibration isolation and transmissibility ii) With a neat sketch,
explain the principle of dynamic vibration absorber. (10 Marks)
b. A machine of mass one tonne is acted upon by an external force of 2450N at a frequency of
1500 r/min. To reduce the effects of vibration, an isolator of rubber having a static
deflection of 2mm under machine load and an estimated damping factor of 0.2 are used.
Determine i) Transmissibility and force transmitted to the ground.
ii) Absolute amplitude iii) Phase. (10 Marks)

5 a. Define Experimental Modal analysis and explain in brief the necessary equipments for the

same side of the neutral axis for successive cycles are found to be decreased by 50% of the
initial value. Determine:
i) Logarithmic decrement
ii) Damping torque per unit velocity
iii) The periodic time of vibration
iv) The frequency when the disc is moved from the fluid.

3 a. What is a dynamic vibration absorber? Show that for such a system, its natural frequency
should be equal to the frequency of the applied force. (10 Marks)
b. A section of pipe pertaining a certain machine vibrations with a range amplitude at a
compressor speed of 220 rpm. For analyzing the system, the spring mass system was
suspended from the pipe to cut as an absorber. A 1 kg absorber may tuned to 220 cycles
resulting in two resonance frequencies of 188 cycles/min and 258 cycles/min. What must be
the mass and spring stiffness of the absorber if the resonant frequency on to the outside the
range of 150 and 310 cycles/min? (10 Marks)

1 a. An automobile wheel and tyre are suspended by a steel rod of 0.5cm diameter and 2m long.
When the wheel is given an angular displacement and released, it makes 10 oscillations in
30.2secs. determine polar moment of inertia of the wheel and tyre. Take G = 80 GPa.

b. The disc of a torsional pendulum has a moment of inertia of 600kg-cm2 which is immersed
in a viscous fluid. The shaft attached to it is 10cm in diameter and 40cm long. When the
pendulum is vibrating, it was observed that the amplitudes on the same sides of the rest
position for successive cycle are 9°, 6° and 4°. Determine :
i) Logarithmic decrement
ii) Damping torque at unit velocity
iii) Periodic time of vibration

c. A machine of 100kg mass is supported on spring of stiffness 700kN/m and has an

b. The seat of helicopter, with the pilot, weighs 1000 N and is found to have a static deflection

i) What is the level of vibration felt by the pilot?
